Prince Karl of Baden

Karl Friedrich Gustav Wilhelm Maximilian von Baden (born March 9, 1832 in Karlsruhe ; † December 3, 1906 there ) was a Baden prince and titular margrave and general of the cavalry in the Prussian army .

Life

Karl von Baden was the youngest son and one of seven surviving children of Grand Duke Leopold and his wife, the Swedish Princess Sophie Wilhelmine von Holstein-Gottorp .

Like his older brother Wilhelm , Karl began a military career. First he served as a cavalryman in the Grand Ducal Baden Army , later he was in Austrian military service. After the Baden Army had been defeated as part of the Federal Army in the German War in 1866, Karl worked in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 as leader of the Baden medical corps in voluntary nursing.

On May 17, 1871, he married Rosalie Luise Freiin von Beust (1845–1908), daughter of Wilhelm Freiherr von Beust. Since these are not the high nobility belonged and therefore no befitting represented woman, the marriage was morganatic closed and further Rosalie as Countess of Rhena to the hereditary title of count charged. The wedding took place in Schloss Bauschlott , which also served as the couple's residence. Rosalie Countess von Rhena was known as a socially committed woman; she founded a women's association in the village of Bauschlott and supported, among other things, a children's school . The marriage resulted in a son, who later became the diplomat Friedrich Graf von Rhena .

As a result of the establishment of the Reich , the Baden Army was incorporated into the Prussian Army by the military convention; thus Karl von Baden was taken over into the Prussian military on July 15, 1871 as major general with a patent from 1869 and as chief of the 3rd Badischer Dragoon Regiment (No. 22) . In September 1873 he was promoted to lieutenant general , in March 1883 to general of the cavalry.

As Prince of Baden, Karl had had a seat and vote in the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly from 1855 and was President of this Chamber from 1897 to 1906.

He died in Karlsruhe in 1906 and was buried in the grand ducal burial chapel .
