action

First part

Looking back on a representation of the night of death of John Paul II on April 2, 2005, mixed with real documentary recordings, the film shows his pontificate. In his first sermon as Pope, he calls for this: “Do not be afraid!” In Moscow, the election of a Polish Pope is causing unrest, who immediately announces that he wants to take action against socialism. The KGB is planning a press campaign against John Paul II.

One of his first official acts as Pope is visiting a sick friend and sick children in the hospital. John Paul II brings his secretary Stanisław Dziwisz with him from Krakow, meets the staff at the Vatican, such as Sister Tobiana, and plans to go skiing. On his first trip abroad, which took him to Mexico, he got to know the poverty of the population. After meeting Oscar Romero , he calls the bishops to unity and hope; at the same time he speaks to the powerful against poverty and oppression in the conscience.

An assassination attempt on John Paul II is being prepared in a secret base of the gray wolves in Vienna; the Turk Mehmet Ali Ağca is supposed to carry it out and is immediately released from his Turkish prison.

After a surprise visit from Hanna and her children - Pawel has since passed away - the conviction matures in John Paul II that he must visit his homeland, which is still ruled by communists. The KGB comes to the conclusion that an attempt to prevent the visit would at most have a suspensive effect. The KGB notes with concern the popularity that John Paul II enjoyed during his visit to Poland. Concerned, the Pope visits Auschwitz .

When Mother Teresa visits him, he asks her to continue her commitment and promises to visit India soon. He learns, dismayed, that Oscar Romero was murdered. On the other hand, John Paul II observes that his visit to Poland has given the Solidarność workers' union a boost; At the same time, the priest Jerzy Popiełuszko campaigns for the workers' cause. The Pope promises Father Thomas a visit to Uganda.

At a general audience on St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981 , Ali Ağca shoots Pope John Paul II. Ali Ağca is arrested, the Pope in the Gemelli Clinic with the assistance of Dr. Renato Buzzonetti performed emergency surgery. As if by a miracle, he survived the attack and the operation. Over the phone, he blesses the dying Wyszyński.

Dr. Renato Buzzonetti takes care of the Pope, who immediately resumes his work. After the failed assassination attempt, the KGB is now proceeding to proclaim martial law under Army General Wojciech Jaruzelski in Poland. Meanwhile, Mother Theresa stands up for the poor and oppressed in Lebanon. In San Salvador, John Paul II kneels at the grave of Oscar Romero. He visits Ali Ağca in prison and forgives him. When he visits Mother Theresa, he takes care of the sick with her.

He was shocked to find out about the murder of Father Popiełuszko. He managed to speak to Solidarność again.

Second part

In August 1990 the Vatican was surprised by the Second Gulf War . This leads to a discussion among the cardinals about the point of wars, especially when they are waged in the name of religion. John Paul II is of the opinion that there is no such thing as a “ just war ”.

When John Paul II repeatedly suffered from seizures, Dr. Buzzonetti to examine him. In the meantime, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli asked the Pope to release him from his duties as Cardinal Secretary of State ; Cardinal Angelo Sodano succeeds him. Dr. Buzzonetti diagnoses an apple-sized tumor that urgently needs to be surgically removed. In the hospital, John Paul II is helping a friend whose son has just passed away. His own operation is successful.

A little later, John Paul II is outraged by the murder of “Mafia hunter” Paolo Borsellino . The Pope travels to Africa, where he shows himself shocked by the situation of the former slaves on Gorew Island. He is happy to visit Father Thomas, who has meanwhile become a bishop. He tells the Pope about the massacres of the population. In the hospital, John Paul II is concerned about the fate of the sick and talks to the Canadian AIDS doctor Julia Ritter. When he spoke out in favor of women’s rights a little later, Julia Ritter asked him critical questions about the church’s dealings with sexuality. He invites her to discuss the matter with him; a lively discussion develops. To the astonishment of Cardinal Secretary of State Sodano, John Paul II sends a women's delegation to the UN conference in Beijing.

After a fall at a general audience, Dr. Buzzonetti diagnosed Parkinson's disease with John Paul II and prescribed appropriate therapy for him. If he falls again, he will fracture his hip and need a hip prosthesis.

Despite multiple security concerns about the Bosnian War , John Paul II plans a trip to Bosnia; Dr. Buzzonetti tries in vain to change his mind. In Sarajevo he received reports on the victims of the war.

Despite previous concerns, World Youth Day in Paris with the Pope is a success. Shortly before, he telephoned the sick mother Theresa, who dies a little later. The Pope uses the Holy Year 2000 to ask for forgiveness for the wrongdoings that the Church has committed in the past. Under the impression of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as a survivor of the Second World War , he warns - in vain - that another war in Iraq would be a catastrophe. After the outbreak of the Iraq war in 2003, he plans to invite representatives of all world religions to a prayer for peace.

The increasingly frail Pope suffers an acute inflammation of the larynx trachea. With great difficulty he can be persuaded to cut the trachea . Even so, his condition is steadily worsening; a little later the Pope dies. The film ends with real film recordings of the funeral of John Paul II led by Cardinal Dean Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger .
