Karrat [ kaχːatˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Karrat ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Uummannaq in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Karrat is located on the south coast of the island of the same name , which is shaped like a banana in the mouth of the Kangilleq in the Karrat fjord . Nuugaatsiaq is nine kilometers away .

history

Karrat was first mentioned in 1793 when 29 people lived there, all of whom were still unbaptized. They had probably come from the north of Upernavik when it was abandoned. In 1798 Karrat was uninhabited. It was not until 1850 that the residential area was taken into use again, probably because a nearby Udsted had been founded in Illorsuit . In 1905, 52 people lived in Karrat. In 1911 the residential area became part of the Illorsuit community. In 1915 Karrat had 78 inhabitants who lived in fifteen houses. There were 16 fishermen, a catechist and a midwife. In 1925, Karrat became part of the Nuugaatsiaq municipality. In 1930 the population had fallen to nine people and shortly afterwards the place was given up.
