history

Upernavik Næs is only called by its Danish name. Strictly speaking, the Greenlandic name Uperniviup Nuua only refers to the cape 2.7 km southeast. The Oqaasileriffik only names the place with the descriptive name Uperniviup Illoqarfikua , which translated means Former Settlement of Upernivik .

At the beginning of the colonial era, the place occasionally served as a summer place, especially for reindeer hunters. Later the settlement became more permanent. In 1793, 14 Greenlanders, all of whom were still unbaptized, lived at the place where they lived. In 1798 there were 18, two of whom were now baptized. In 1805 the place was uninhabited. After it was requested that there should be a place between Uummannaq and Upernavik as a travel stop, it was used again as a winter place. Around 1845 the last pagans of the district were baptized here. In 1849, 72 people lived on the island. They still celebrated typical pagan dance festivals. Later the place was temporarily uninhabited again.

In 1894 two families from Tuullittalik moved to the place of Upernavik Næs. In 1905 27 people lived in the area. In 1911 Upernavik became part of the Illorsuit parish. In 1915 the residential area had 33 residents who lived in six houses. There were eight hunters and one fisherman, and one of the hunters was employed as a reader. Since the place does not appear in the 1930 census, it can be assumed that it was abandoned during the 1920s.
