Uummannatsiaq [ ˈuːmːaˌnːat͡siɑq ] (according to the old spelling Ũmánatsiaĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Uummannaq in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Uummannatsiaq is located on the northwest coast of the island of Ikerasak . 15 km southeast on the same island is the place Ikerasak , from which the island takes its name. To the northwest it is 22 km to Uummannaq .

history

Uummannatsiaq was inhabited before the colonial era. It turned out that the area was well suited to fishing for yarn and so in 1790 the plant was moved from Eqaluk to Uummannatsiaq on a trial basis. A warehouse was also built on the island of Talerua to the south . In 1791 a storey house and some other buildings were moved from Uummannaq to Uummannatsiaq. At the same time, the missionary from Uummannaq also settled in Uummannatsiaq and took some Greenlanders with him, as the colony was considered overpopulated. In 1792 there were already 70 people living in Uummannatsiaq. In 1798 there were already 108 people. It was recognized that Uummannatsiaq would soon be overpopulated and so some people moved to Eqaluk, among others. In 1805 only 69 people lived in Uummannatsiaq. During the war from 1807 to 1814, the facility had to be temporarily abandoned. In 1817 a Danish sailor was appointed to resume operations, but he was robbed and the facility was eventually abandoned altogether. In 1823 the multi-storey building was moved to the facility in Niaqornat , which was founded instead . Uummannatsiaq remained an Udsted under Ikerasak until 1828 , but when the bacon house burned down, the place became a residential area. In 1849 there were 26 people in Uummannatsiaq.

In 1915 Uummannatsiaq had 59 inhabitants. It is said that the inhabitants were hardly of European descent and still practiced their pagan-Eskimo traditions and customs such as the drum dance . There were ten residential buildings and from 1917 a school, which was almost 14 m² in size and built in the Greenlandic style. There were nine hunters, a fisherman and a catechist. In 1924 a school chapel was built. The population was constant at 35 for a long time before it rose to 60 by 1946. In 1960 there were 64 people living in Uummannatsiaq. In 1968 the place to live was given up.

From 1911, Uummannatsiaq was part of the Ikerasak municipality. From 1950 the place belonged to the new municipality Uummannaq .
