Katanning is a place in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia , located 277 kilometers southeast of Perth on the Great Southern Highway .
etymology
Although the meaning of katanning is unclear, it is believed to be a local Aboriginal word meaning the meeting place of the top tribes (kart-annin), or pale pool of fresh water (kartanup). Another version says the city is named after the name of a local Aboriginal woman.
history
Governor James Stirling and surveyor general John Septimus Roe were the first Europeans to explore the region of what is now Katanning. In 1835 they crossed the region on their way from Perth to Albany .
Around 1870 , some sandalwood cutters came to the region, but without settling. In 1889 , the city was created with the expansion of the Great Southern Railway , which runs the route from Perth to Albany.
The city's location was initially developed by the Western Australian Land Company . In 1896 the Australian government acquired the railway line and the space that the city encompasses. In 1898 Katanning was officially announced.
In 1891 the brothers Frederick and Charles Piesse built a flour mill not far from the city center. For his part, the local farmers planted wheat . As a result, Katanning developed economically. Today the mill functions as a museum.
At 8:00 am on October 10, 2007 , an earthquake struck the region. It had a magnitude of M W = 4.8 on the Richter scale and was the largest earthquake in the region for 40 years.
Today Katanning is a regional service center for the Great Southern Region .

Different religions are practiced in the city. Christians , Anglicans , Baptists , Lutherans , Adventists , Jehovah's Witnesses and Muslims live in Katanning . The Muslims are mostly immigrants who came to the city from the Cocos Islands in the 1970s .
Worth seeing
- There is a castle-like structure in the town that was built as a winery.
- In Austral Terrace, next to the railway line, there is a statue of Frederick Henry Piesse . It was built by Pietro Porcelli. It was set in 1916 .
