Former Catholic school house

The former Catholic school house in the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Dirmstein is a historic stone house that was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It is a listed building .

Geographical location

The house with the address Affenstein 9 stands at 103  m above sea level. NHN diagonally to the street where, since the Middle Ages, the castle square belonging to the Affenstein castle , which was later abandoned,  was located. Today the building forms the eastern end of an approximately 300 m² triangular open space, which extends in front of the south portal of the baroque Laurentius Church. It is paved and is used as a so-called church square for parking purposes.

building

The building is a one and a half storey white plastered building under an eaves-standing half- hip roof . The simple facade of the ground floor with the entrance in the middle has rectangular windows like the entire house.

The top floor initially only contained a small schoolmaster's apartment. It was later expanded and provided with dormers , five of which face the street and two to the rear.

Building history

When the Palatinate came under Bavarian administration in 1816 after the Wars of Liberation , the school system was also reformed. This meant in particular the establishment of denominational schools . In Dirmstein in 1820 the Catholic and, a little later, the Protestant school building replaced the school, which had been operated across denominations for around a hundred years, mostly in what was then the town hall . Today the building of the former Catholic school serves as a residential building.
