Old cemetery (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Old graveyard

The old cemetery in the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Dirmstein is classified as a natural monument under the list number ND-7332-518 because of its old stock of trees , at the same time it is under monument protection as a whole because of a number of culturally and historically valuable tombs . It was in use from the Middle Ages through the 1850s; then the new cemetery was created north of the village .

Geographical location

The old cemetery is in the east of the community, in Niederdorf , about 1 km from the new cemetery. Today's access leads past the property at Gerolsheimer Str. 4 on the right . Originally the cemetery was directly adjacent to St. Peter's Church , which was completely demolished in 1809 after around 800 years due to its dilapidation. The former summer palace of the prince-bishops of Worms is 100 m southwest of it, and the Eckbach , a left tributary of the Rhine, flows south of the site .

The cemetery, which measures around 1200 m² today, was previously completely surrounded by a 2 m high quarry stone wall, of which even larger parts - sometimes in ruins - have been preserved.

The cemetery is dominated by old trees, among which robinia predominate. In addition to other birds - for example crows , jackdaws and magpies - gray herons have been nesting in them since the early 2000s , looking for food on and in the nearby waters of Eckbach and Floßbach .

Of the remaining graves, the best known is that of the doctor Johann von Hubertus (1752–1828), who was active in the Habsburg service and who spent his retirement at home. His younger brother Franz Balthasar (born April 19, 1766; † April 9, 1832), who was also a doctor and died in Pressburg, Austria (now the capital of Slovakia ), is remembered by a memorial inscription on the right side of the tombstone. On the back is the sister of the two doctors, Margaretha Römer nee. Hubertus (born January 29, 1764 - † September 9, 1850).

history

Natural monument: old trees
Tomb of the Florentine by Camuzi (1802–1855)

The cemetery was laid out in connection with St. Peter's Church, probably like this in the 11th century. Today the complex is overgrown, the gravestones still standing from the 18th and 19th centuries are overgrown with ivy . The inscriptions weather more and more from year to year and are no longer legible in the majority of the graves. The fact that the cemetery was in use until at least 1855 is proven by the data on the tombstone of the Florentine von Camuzi (1802–1855), who was a younger sister of the later Dirmstein mayor Gideon von Camuzi (1799–1879). To the left of her grave is that of Anna von Camuzi (1828–1835), daughter of Gideon, who died at the age of seven.

During maintenance work in the second half of the 20th century, the upright tombstones were left as they were, and a number of fallen tombstones were collected and leaned against the surrounding wall. A number of the fallen objects that were considered to be particularly worthy of protection were taken to the new cemetery and placed there near the entrance.
