Katrin Vohland

Katrin Vohland (born September 29, 1968 in Hamburg ) is a German biologist and former politician . From 2005 to 2007 she was state chairwoman of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Brandenburg . Since June 1, 2020 she has been General Director and Scientific Managing Director of the Natural History Museum Vienna .

Life

Vohland began studying biology at Bielefeld University in 1989 , and in 1991 she moved to Bayreuth University , where she completed her studies in 1994 with a thesis on the subject of resource use and the behavior of a ladybug . From 1995 she did research at the Max Planck Institute for Limnology in Plön in the Tropical Ecology Department, and in 1999 she did her doctorate at the University of Kiel with a dissertation on species formation and biodiversity in the Amazon region.

From 1999 onwards she conducted research at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin on biodiversity and land use in southern Africa. In 2005 she moved to the Chair of Vegetation Ecology and Nature Conservation at the University of Potsdam , from 2006 to 2009 she was responsible for the project Protected Areas in Germany in Climate Change - Risks and Options for Action at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) . From 2009 she worked again at the Museum für Naturkunde, where she took over the management of the research area science communication and knowledge research in 2014 . She is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Hohe Tauern National Park and the advisory board of the Austrian Citizen Science Conference 2020 , where she also acts as a spokesperson.

Based on her work at the Berlin Natural History Museum, Vohland made a decisive contribution to the development of Citizen Science in Germany and Europe. In addition to building the German citizen science platform they officiated from 2014 to 2018 as executive director of the European Association Citizen Science eV (European Citizen Science Association). During this time, she set up numerous national and international networks to promote exchange and the scientific development of Citizen Science. These include u. a. a European citizen science platform, a COST network for scientific cooperation and mobility on citizen science in Europe and the Leibniz research network "Citizen Science" at the German Leibniz Association . In terms of content, Vohland worked on the connection between citizen science and sustainability , open science and interfaces between science and politics.

Vohland has been involved with the German Greens ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) since the 1990s . From 2004 she was chairman of the Potsdam district association, from 2005 to 2007 she was state chairman of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Brandenburg alongside Axel Vogel . In 2007, Ska Keller succeeded her in this role. In 2019 Vohland ran for the state list of the Greens in Brandenburg.

On March 13, 2020, State Secretary Ulrike Lunacek presented her as the successor to Christian Köberl as Scientific Managing Director and General Director of the Natural History Museum Vienna , who succeeded him in this role on June 1, 2020. According to State Secretary Lunacek, Vohland should suspend her party membership.
