action

Commissioner Clemens “King” Frowein from Wuppertal is suspended from the police force. A little later he realized a new idea and published a website called bullenjagd.de on the Internet , where citizens can upload photos of police officers committing traffic offenses. But only when he starts his new job as a penguin keeper in the Wuppertal Zoo does he become happy. The moment he believes his life is going for the better again, news overtakes him that one of his ex-colleagues has been found by the police with a broken neck at the end of the stairs with a tap-tap-tone . Because Clemens' successor, Commissioner Elbroich, believes in an accidental death and King is firmly convinced of a murder, he begins to investigate the case. At his side is a group of somewhat weird birds, including two of his work colleagues, the gay bouncer Wolfken and the pathologist Nicole. His suspicion is reinforced by two more mysterious deaths of the same kind. In the search for the perpetrator, King repeatedly puts himself in danger and is targeted by the murderer. After tracking down a strange sect, venturing into the dark quarters with the city's boxing clubs and pubs, always followed by local reporter Schönfeld, he can solve the murder case in the end.

background

King Ping was producer Dirk Michael Häger's film debut . He and his colleague Christoph Schmidt were inspired for the film plot by the heraldic animal of the Wuppertal Zoo , a king penguin , and by the stories of Edgar Wallace , which is why the perpetrator in the film was also called "The Stair Murderer".

The budget for the film was around € 290,000.

reception

The film was received controversially due to its innovative design: Although King Ping received mostly positive reviews, it was also often irritating. While Kino.de sees a “wild, self-confident and bizarre crime comic” and praises it as “cool, comic-like, iconic”, Die Welt thinks : “The bizarre fairy tale about police officers, transvestites and local color is not really round, but I don't want to miss it entirely But you don't either. ”On Moviepilot , he achieved 6.6 out of 10 points in the critics' rating. Steven Gätjen criticizes that the “wild but also confused genre mix” has “its quirks”, but sums up that King Ping is still “charming” and a “wonderful freakshow”. Programmkino.de appreciates the “… anarchic, improvised charm” and is certain “from main actor Sierk Radzei, who plays a deeply relaxed, coffee-addicted ex-police officer, to doctor-drummer Bela B. , who once again has a weakness for the unusual Film material proves that everyone involved apparently had a lot of fun with the shooting. " The Tagesspiegel recognizes in the" pretty genre mix "a" number revue that has something Tarantino-like: sometimes German provincial Tarantino, sometimes Tarantino for the poor. And you have to get that right first. ” King Ping , who is“ brimming with weird characters and anarchic ideas ”, clearly makes the cinema magazine Cinema want to continue, because it wants:“ More of it ”.
