The Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Kraskowo ( German  Schönfließ ) is a building built in two sections from the 14th and 15th centuries. From the Reformation to 1945, it was a Protestant house of worship for the Schönfließ district of the united parishes of Schönfließ-Tolksdorf in East Prussia . Today it is a Catholic branch church of the parish Łankiejmy (German Langheim ) in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

Geographical location

Kraskowo is located in the north of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship on Voivodeship Road 592 - former German Reichsstraße 135 - between Łankiejmy (Langheim) and Garbno (Lamgarben) in the powiat Kętrzyński ( Rastenburg district ).

The church stands east of the side street coming from Babieniec (Babziens) , shortly before it joins the Voivodship Street.

The Schönfließ church was built as a choirless boulder building with a brick frame. The tower presented was also heavily interspersed with boulders. The eastern part of the church was built in the 14th century and the western part was built in the 15th century. The upper floors of the tower with the substructure from the 15th century were rebuilt after being damaged in a hurricane in 1875.

In 1678 the sacristy and vestibule were added to the north of the church . A notch in Latin capitals can be seen on the pointed arched entrance from the vestibule to the interior of the church: Christof Herndorff, May 13th, 1678 . The reason for this engraving is not clear

The interior of the church lies under a flat wooden ceiling. The altar table was once bricked with a support for the shrine. A fragment of the altar from 1645 with wood carvings and pictures is the oldest furnishings in the church. The base of the altar was once adorned with a picture of the Last Supper by Stephanus Eisenbergk . In 1910, old carvings were replaced by a picture “Jesus in Gethsemane”.

The pulpit from 1648 and the baptistery from 1645 also come from the master of the altar . The two Last Supper angels were created around 1750.

In 1883 the church received an organ . The ring consisted of three bells .

Church / parish

A church was built in Schönfließ in the pre-Reformation period around 1350. With the introduction of the Reformation in East Prussia , it became Protestant .

Church history

Together with the neighboring church in Tolksdorf ( Polish Tołkiny ), the Schönfließer Church was assigned to the parish in Lamgarben (Polish Garbno ) on June 11, 1528 . But already in 1603 a priest was officiating in Schönfließ and Tolksdorf. Both churches were then united under one rectory with seat in Schönfließ until 1945

In 1925, the total number of parish members in Schönfließ-Tolksdorf was 1520. Of them, 1160 belonged to the parish of Schönfließ. The church patronage was incumbent on the landowner of Henriettenhof ( Chmielnik in Polish ).

The combined parishes Schönfließ and Tolksdorf were incorporated into the church district Rastenburg (Polish: Kętrzyn ) in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union until 1945 .

Flight and expulsion of the local population put an end to the life of the evangelical community in what was then called "Kraskowo" in 1945 and later. Protestant church members living here today orientate themselves towards the parish church in Kętrzyn in the Masuria diocese of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .

Catholic

Before 1945 there were relatively few Catholics in the Schönfließ region. On April 14, 1860, the village was incorporated into the parish of Rößel ( Polish Reszel ) in what was then the diocese of Warmia . After the formation of a parish in Korschen (in Polish: Korsze ) in 1904, Schönfließ was reclassified there.

After 1945, the number of Catholic church members increased sharply when numerous new Polish citizens settled here. They claimed the previously evangelical church as a center of worship and gave it the name of "Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej" (German " Mother of God of Czestochowa "). Today it is a branch church of the parish in Łankiejmy (German Langheim ) in the deanery Reszel (Rößel) in the current Archdiocese of Warmia within the Polish Catholic Church .
