Kiss is a 1986 song by the American musician Prince , which he wrote , composed , arranged and produced . The piece was released on February 5, 1986 as the pre-release of his album Parade . Prince recorded Kiss with his then backing band The Revolution . The song can also be heard in the Prince film Under the Cherry Moon .

history

During the recording of the Parade soundtrack album , Prince recorded a short acoustic demo with a verse and a chorus. He originally wrote the song for a band called Mazarati, who reworked it so that he ended up singing the song himself. In the chorus he added a guitar solo, while Mazarati took over the backing vocals.

When released on February 5, 1986, this became Prince's number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy . At the 1987 Grammy Awards , Prince and Kiss won the Best Performance by a Duo or Group - Pop category .

A version with long instrumentation appeared on a 12-inch version. Here also are bass guitar , organ and horns to hear. This 7:16 minute version also contains another line in which Prince sings with Jill Jones . The B-side of the song is ♥ or $ (Love or Money), in which Prince sings in high falsetto ; part of it was heard in the movie Under the Cherry Moon . In the New Musical Express list of the 150 Greatest Hits it landed at number 4 and in the Rolling Stone list of the 500 best songs of all time this reached number 464.

In the film Pretty Woman (1990), the prostitute Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts , sings the song, and some characters in the film also performed the song in Happy Feet (2006).

Kiss can also be found on the Prince compilations The Hits / The B-Sides (1993), The Very Best of Prince (2001), Ultimate (2006) and 4Ever (2016).

review

Steve Huey praises the reduced aspect of the song on Allmusic.com. He emphasizes that Prince “ completely dropping the bass tracks ” and “ essentially strips funk down to its barest essentials and then cuts a little bit more ”. He also praises Prince's voice (“ upper register of his generous falsetto range ”) and the background voices (“ alien soundscape ”). He summarized:

"[...] all one can really do is marvel that the song works so well with so little."

Music video

The music video was directed by Rebecca Blake in January 1986 in Los Angeles. The plot of the video is a choreography performed by Prince. This takes place in a hall with the seated, guitar-playing Wendy Melvoin and the model Monique Mannen who dances with Prince and who sometimes wears a veil over her upper body.
