Koira Kano is located in the west of the urban area of Niamey and has the character of a sandy suburb for the economically better off. The surrounding districts are Koubia in the northwest, Yantala Haut in the northeast, Yantala Bas in the southeast, Ambassades in the south and Goudel in the southwest. The district is located in a plateau with a sand layer more than 2.5 meters deep, which allows better infiltration than in other parts of the city.

The standard scheme for street names in Koira Kano is rue KK 1 , with the French rue for street followed by KK for Koira Kano and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations.

history

The place name comes from the Zarma language and means "charming city". The area was still an undeveloped, partly tree-lined arable area until the 1970s. Koira Kano emerged in the 1980s, a decade of particularly rapid population growth in Niamey, alongside a number of other new neighborhoods. Here, apartments of medium and high standards were built for higher officials.
