The Koppensteiner Höhe is 554.9  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the southeastern Hunsrück . It is the most south-westerly significant elevation in the Soonwald and is located near Henau in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The ruins of Koppenstein Castle are on the rock formation at the summit .

The Koppensteiner Höhe is located in the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park . Its summit is 930 m north-northwest of Henau, 1.8 km south-east of Gehlweiler and 2.1 km south-south-east of Gemünden . Its ridge line, which runs from southwest to northeast, lies on the border of the local communities Henau in the southeast, which includes the summit region, and Gehlweiler in the northwest, which extends to around 540  m in height. The next higher mountain is the Gemündener Höhe ( 575.2  m ), just under 1.9 km northeast .

To the west past the Koppensteiner Höhe, the Kellenbach (lower reaches of the Simmerbach ) flows, which forms the border to the southwest Lützelsoon , and the summit is about 300 m above the - between the Soonwald and Lützelsoon below the rock Langenstein ( ND ) - at about 250 up to 260  m lying valley floor.

A large quartzite quarry lies on the south-western mountain slope above Henau .

Natural allocation

The Koppensteiner Höhe belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Hunsrück (No. 24), in the main unit Soonwald (240) and in the subunit Großer Soon (240.1) to the (eponymous) natural area Großer Soon (240.11). The landscape slopes down to the west, south and south-east into the natural area of ​​the Simmerbach Gorge (240.12). To the northwest it falls into the natural area Untere Simmerner Mulde (241.01), which in the main unit Simmerner Mulde (241) belongs to the sub-unit Simmerner Hochmulde (241.0).

Protected areas

Parts of the Soonwald landscape protection area are located on the predominantly wooded Koppensteiner Höhe ( CDDA no. 324698; designated in 1980; 273.3564  km² in size). The fauna-flora-habitat area Obere Nahe extends to the south-west slope (FFH No. 6309-301; 56.27 km²).

On the Koppensteiner Höhe there are rock formations with the ruins of Koppenstein Castle, which was built in the 12th century . Its keep is still well preserved, which can be climbed and from whose viewing platform the view over the Hunsrück falls. At the foot of the mountain there are sparse ruins of a former settlement.

Traffic and walking

The Koppensteiner Höhe can be reached from the surrounding villages via the district roads  61 and 62, the latter passing about 550 m east-northeast of the summit and offering a hiker's parking lot and a bus stop at its apex at about 490  m .

The Soonwaldsteig , an 83 km long long- distance hiking trail from Kirn an der Nahe to Bingen am Rhein , runs from the southwest of Lützelsoon over the Koppensteiner Höhe to the Alte Burg . The European long-distance hiking trail E3 leads over the transition area to the northeastern neighbor Gemündener Höhe .
