The Kops I and Kops II hydropower plants are two power plants operated by illwerke vkw AG in Montafon, Austria .

Kopswerk I

The power house of Kopswerk I is in Partenen and was built between 1962 and 1969. No avalanche and mire-proof location could be found there. Therefore, the power house had to be built in a rock as a cavern power plant and the 220 kV switchgear on a reinforced concrete slab in the Partenen equalization basin.

The Kopswerk I uses the difference in altitude of around 800 m from the Kops reservoir to generate electricity from hydropower . It is designed as a cavern power station.

Bottleneck capacity : 247  MW
Standard working capacity : 392  GWh

Technical specifications

Cavern power house with three horizontal-axis machine groups, each consisting of a generator and two two-nozzle Pelton free-jet turbines .

Kopswerk II

The Kopswerk II is also designed as a cavern power plant and is located in Rifa , between Partenen and Gaschurn . It is the largest pumped storage power plant operated by illwerke vkw AG. The project, which costs around 360 million euros, uses the Kopssee – Tafamunt – Rifa slope.

Construction began in September 2004. In October 2008, two turbines were put into operation and used to provide control energy for the grids involved. In November 2008 the third turbine was also put into operation.
