The Rodund II hydropower plant is a storage power plant operated by illwerke vkw AG in the Austrian Montafon .

The two plants Rodund I and Rodund II are directly connected to each other in the municipality of Vandans .

Both power plants take advantage of the difference in altitude to the Latschau reservoir above Tschagguns .

History and use

Rodundwerk II was built to relieve regular operations of Rodundwerk I. Plant II was put into operation in 1976.

The hydraulic machine set of Rodundwerk II is a pump turbine ( Francis turbine ). This can work in one direction of rotation as a turbine (generator operation), in the other direction of rotation as a pump (pump operation).

The generator and the motor of the machine set are also combined in one machine (air-cooled motor generator ). The generator is regulated via the water flow rate. The start-up control in pumping mode is thyristor-controlled by a converter .

In 1976 the Rodundwerk II was the most powerful pumped storage power plant in Europe . Due to strong vibrations, the original machine set could not be used in continuous operation in the control range from 0 to 110  MW (with a maximum load of 276 MW). The pump turbine of the Rodundwerk II is characterized not only by its start-up speed but also by its high degree of efficiency and its performance for active power and reactive power control tasks in the network .

In addition to generating peak and balancing energy , Rodundwerk II also serves as a storage facility for pumps .

Until the Kopswerk II went into operation (2008), the Rodundwerk II was the most powerful power station in Vorarlberg .

Technical specifications

The output of the machine set of Rodundwerk II is able to cover more than half of the amount of energy required in Vorarlberg in winter.

The power plant is housed in a free-standing power house. The machine set itself is a vertical machine (shaft power plant). This consists of a Francis turbine coupled with a motor generator. Total weight of impeller , shaft and rotor : 487 tons

  • Bottleneck output (rated turbine output): until 2009: 276 MW, from 2011 (after damage): 295 MW
  • Engine power consumed in pumping mode (2011): 276 MW
  • Standard work capacity (2011): 486  GWh
  • Nominal generator output: up to 2009: 310 MVA, from 2011: 345 MVA

The Rodundwerk II, like the Rodundwerk I, uses the Latschau – Rodund slope. However, it is completely separated hydraulically from Rodundwerk I to the Rodund underwater basin (Rodund basin I to III ) (separate pressure shaft ).

  • Raw drop height approx. 350 m
  • Water flow in generator mode: up to 2009: 90 m 3 / s, from 2011: 98 m 3 / s
  • Water flow in pumping mode (from 2011): 73 m 3 / s.

Damage in 2009

On July 3, 2009, Rodundwerk II was automatically shut down due to a thunderstorm (emergency shutdown). The emergency shutdown detached a pole weighing around seven tons from the rotor (rotor laminations ). This destroyed the generator and the turbine ( total write-off ). Escaping storage oil also caused a fire.

In the years 2009 to 2011 a new machine set was installed and at the same time the output capacity of the generator was increased by approx. 11%. The official restart took place on December 30, 2011 after an operational shutdown of 913 days. The restoration cost around 65 million euros .
