history

The “Verein für Heimatpflege zu Demmin”, which was officially founded in 1916 but had been active since 1914, had set itself the goal of building a local history museum to maintain the local culture. The first chairman of the association, Alexander Rosenbrock, published a call to the citizens of the district to hand in antiquities and memorabilia from their private property for the purpose of building a museum collection. As early as 1919 there were several hundred pieces in the association's collection. The city council made the coins and historical pieces in its possession available to the association. In that year, the construction of a library began. The traveling exhibitions held since 1917 were supplemented by a permanent exhibition of exhibits in the shop window of a shop on Demminer Markt.

The school teacher Paul Thielscher , chairman of the association from 1922 to 1924, took care of the processing of the pewter, coin and autograph collections and the sculptural works. He managed to accommodate the exhibits in the district administration building. He was followed in the chairmanship by District Administrator Gottfried von und zu Gilsa . In 1925 the museum had four rooms, but a visit could only be made by appointment.

The district home museum was located on the upper floor from 1929 to 1995.

In 1929 the new building of the Kreissparkasse was completed, which had 300 m² of exhibition space on the upper floor as well as rooms for administration and storage. On March 30, 1930, the district council decided to take over the local history museum in the possession of the district. The technical administration remained with the "Association for Home Care". The District Home Museum was officially opened on February 11, 1932.

While Demmin was badly destroyed in the Second World War after the Red Army marched in at the beginning of May 1945, the building of the Kreissparkasse with the museum was completely preserved. The collections suffered only minor losses. In 1950 the district home museum was reopened after clearing and order work. The museum director Lothar Diemer set up a mill museum attached to the district home museum in Jarmen . The mill was moved to the Agricultural History Museum in Alt Schwerin in 1964. He also set up a photo archive that was expanded by his successor Brigitte Oltmanns, who ran the museum from 1957 to 1960.

Although the Kreisheimatmuseum was the second largest museum in the Neubrandenburg district in the 1960s , its existence was in jeopardy. As a result of the resolutions of the VI. At the SED party congress, the museums in the district should be reorganized. However, it was possible to avert the closure of the museum, whose holdings and employees were to move to the district museum.

In 1973 the permanent collection on Demmin's town and district history was rearranged chronologically and should be continuously updated with regard to the history of the present since the end of the war. In the 1970s, the museum's newspaper archive was opened to the public.

After the fall of the Wall , the annual visitor numbers, which were between 6,000 and 11,000 in the 1980s, fell to 3,000 to 4,000. In 1990 the museum was affiliated to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Museum Association. In the early 1990s, the museum library was made available to the public. In 1992 the position of museum director was cut and the number of employees reduced from eight to two. The exhibition was secured through the use of ABM staff . The museum's attractiveness was increased by renovating the exhibition space, and the number of visitors was slowly increasing again. The district home museum became a member of the " Society for Pomeranian History, Classical Studies and Art ".

In 1995 the museum was closed in preparation for the move to a renovated and converted warehouse on Demminer Hanseufer. The museum was opened on July 6, 1996 in the new rooms on the 5th floor of the warehouse. On November 4th of the same year the “Friends of the District Home Museum Demmin eV” was founded, which sees the support of the work of the museum as its task. Since 1997 the association has been organizing series of lectures on regional history, which are also published in book form.

After the lease expired, the museum moved into new rooms in the same building. In 2010 the sponsorship of the museum went to the Demminer Regionalmuseum eV and a corresponding renaming took place. After the association's sponsorship expired in 2014, it was not possible to find a new location for the museum. The regional museum was closed on June 1, 2015.

The previous exhibition

The earlier "permanent exhibition", which existed until 2015, presented the history of the region from prehistory and early history to the present day. A special feature of the exhibits on the Stone Age , Bronze and Iron Ages were the replicas of the 3500 year old ones found in 1911 near Daberkow Lurs . Other finds came from the period of Slavic settlement in the region. Documents, coins and weapons were on display from the time the city was founded, Demmin's membership in the Hanseatic League up to the Thirty Years' War . This also included a reprint of the Lubin map of Pomerania . A chain of office with the picture of the last Duke of Pomerania, Bogislaw XIV , was on loan in the exhibition.

The large Demminer Ratswaage, the only completely preserved scale of this type in a larger area, dates from 1714. Other exhibits such as pewter utensils and guild symbols related to the history of the craft guilds. The first edition of Fritz Reuter's "Dei Reis' nah Belligen" was printed on a toggle press in the Demminer Gesellius print shop . Further topics of the exhibition were the 2nd Pomeranian Uhlan Regiment No. 9 , which was formerly stationed in Demmin, as well as the time of National Socialism and the GDR .

Some of the art furniture in styles from Baroque to Biedermeier came from former manor houses in the district . This included porcelain from the 18th century from the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin , which came from Kartlow Castle . Some of the paintings came from the impressionist Ilse von Heyden-Linden .

Digital museum

In 2015 the museum in Demmin was closed, the exhibits were cleared and stored. The Garrison Association Demmin "9. Ulanen" eV suggested that pieces from the collection be published despite the museum being closed. With this aim, consultations took place with employees of the Mecklenburg Lake District, the owner of the museum collection in Demmin. In 2017, a contract was signed between the Demmin Garrison Association and the Mecklenburg Lake District district for the digitization of the fund. In September 2018, the Digital Museum went online with around 20,000 digitized items; further exhibits are published at irregular intervals.
