The Krimmler Tauernhaus is a Tauernhaus in Austria that has existed for over 600 years at 1622  m above sea level. A. Höhe and is located in the Krimmler Achental on the Alpine mule track between Krimml , Austria and Kasern in South Tyrol , Italy .

history

The Tauernhaus was first mentioned in a document in 1389 and is attested as a taberna (inn) from 1437 . The wooden structure, which dates from the 16th century, has been rebuilt and enlarged several times, the old, wood-paneled room with various inscriptions has been preserved and is considered the oldest in Oberpinzgau .

The Tauernhaus was a fiefdom legally united with a farm with the obligation to provide for and accommodate travelers passing through free of charge if necessary and to ensure that the Tauernweg was kept open. In return, the landlord received an annual grain allocation from the archbishop's court chamber in Salzburg . The trade route over the main Alpine ridge from the Pinzgau to southern Tyrol was then mainly used to transport goods such as salt, wine, brandy and iron with pack horses. At that time there was an interesting collaboration with the “Ahrntaler Tauernhaus” - today's Berghotel Kasern . For example, the local landlord “Kasr am Taurn” was allocated a property with the condition that poorly equipped passers-by were given hats, gloves, ropes and the like. These objects were handed in on this side of the pass, in the Krimmler Tauernhaus, and then found the way back in the opposite direction to Kasern.

The Tauernweg was already used during the Roman Empire by legions from the Noricum province , to which the area on both sides of the pass belonged at that time. In the Middle Ages , it served as an alternative route when simpler Alpine passes such as the Brenner Pass could not be used due to political disputes; for example, the future emperor Charles IV used it in 1340 despite the most difficult weather conditions.

In the 19th century, many farmers from the Tyrolean Ahrntal acquired land in the Krimmler Achental, as this high valley offered usable pasture grounds early in the year due to a southerly wind, which was much more productive than the steep and narrow Ahrntal. Since then, cows have been herded along the narrow and difficult path of the Krimmler Tauern during the summer to this day .

Certificate of Honor from the Jewish Agency for Israel

The passport became particularly important in 1947 when 8,000 Eastern European Holocaust survivors were smuggled through the Achen Valley to Italy by the Jewish aid organization Brichah ( Escape ) in order to get to Palestine via the port of Genoa . This route was chosen because it was the only border piece of the American occupation zone that bordered directly on Italy. In contrast to the British and French occupying forces, the Americans tolerated the passage. The starting point of the treks was a displaced person camp (DP camp) in Saalfelden . The great humanitarian achievement that the Tauern hostess Liesl Geisler , who died in 1985 , had accomplished for the Jewish emigrants who had been racially, religiously or politically persecuted until the end of the war was posthumously recognized by the Jewish Agency with a certificate of honor in 2009 .

In 2016, the Krimmler Tauernhaus was structurally greatly enlarged. In order to meet the changed demand, the previous overnight accommodations in simple rooms and mattress camps were supplemented by more comfortable rooms with their own sanitary facilities. A small hydropower plant had already been put into operation in 2011 , which uses the steep gradient of the Rainbach just before it flows into the Krimmler Ache .

Hiking opportunities

From 1901, when the waterfall path along the Krimmler waterfalls was expanded by the Warnsdorf / Krimml section, the flow of visitors in the Krimmler Achental increased sharply, and tourism became an additional source of income for the owners of the Krimmler Tauernhaus. You can reach the Tauernhaus from Krimml via this path in around 3 hours. From there there are further destinations:

  • To the Richterhütte ( 2374  m ) in Rainbachtal in about 3 hours.
  • To the Warnsdorfer Hütte ( 2336  m ) in the upper Krimmler Achental in approx. 3 hours.
  • To the Birnlückenhütte ( 2441  m ) in the Ahrntal in 5.5 hours
  • To the Zittauer Hütte ( 2329  m ) in the Wildgerlostal over the Rainbachscharte ( 2720  m ) in about 6 hours.
  • The top of the Krimmler Tauern pass ( 2634  m ) in approx. 3 hours and then on to Kasern in South Tyrol, another approx. 3 hours.
