Kristen Visbal (born December 3, 1962 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is an American sculptor .

Life

Kristen Elizabeth Visbal was born in Montevideo to the American couple Ralph Albert and Elizabeth Krystyniak Visbal, a painter, and grew up in Potomac, Maryland . Her father worked in the United States' foreign service , later for the Inter-American Development Bank . The parents promoted the schooling of their sons and daughters alike. From 1980 to 1982 Visbal studied at the University of Arizona in Tucson and from 1983 to 1984 at the University of Maryland . She then worked in sales and marketing for the Omni Hotels sales office in Washington DC. In 1988 she moved to Lewes, Delaware , selling ads for local radio stations and working in a jewelry store in Ocean City until she returned to university in around 1992. In 1995 she graduated from Salisbury University in Salisbury (Maryland) with a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude .

At the art foundry Johnson Atelier in Mercerville , New Jersey , she received three years of training in the technical aspects of the lost wax process from 1995 to 1998 before setting up her own studio Visbal Fine Bronze Sculpture in Lewes in late 1998 / early 1999 .

Visbal is a member of the National Sculpture Society , the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club , the Pen and Brush Club and the Allied Artists Of America .

Visbal's works are primarily bronze sculptures that she creates using the lost wax technique. Many of her mostly larger than life works, which are characterized by their realistic elaboration, are in public space.

In 2003 she received the Charlotte Dunwiddie Memorial Award from the Pen and Brush Club for her realistic sculpture Jessica and the Gold Medal Of Honor from the National Arts Club in New York City for her sculpture Prowler, a Bengal tiger.

Her statue of the Fearless Girl , which was erected on March 8, 2017 in Bowling Green Park in New York City, opposite the statue of the Charging Bull , achieved a great media presence . Since 2018, Visbal has been working on a series of 25 limited edition replicas of the statue that will be placed in public places so that the statue can continue to spread a message of gender equality . One of the replicas was set up in Oslo on March 8, 2018, it is in front of the Grand Hotel, opposite the Norwegian Parliament, which is looking at it.
