Art compass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kunstkompass is a ranking of the world's most sought-after contemporary artists , compiled annually in Germany since 1970 . Until 2006, it was published every autumn at Art Cologne , then at times in spring. It appears in changing magazines, most recently on November 16, 2017 in the magazine Capital.

From 2013 to 2017 the ranking was led by Gerhard Richter , Bruce Nauman and Rosemarie Trockel .

history

The ranking was established in 1970 by the art and business journalist Willi Bongard . He published the art compass annually from 1970 to 1985 in his art information service art aktuell and initially in the business magazine Capital . Bongard assumed that although the quality of art cannot be measured, its resonance in the art world can. In contrast to the Mei Moses Fine Art Index , prices and sales success do not play a role in the research.

After Bongard's death in 1985, the artist and art journalist Linde Rohr-Bongard continued working on the art compass. Since 1995 it has published the Kunstkompass as a ranking of the 100 most important contemporary artists.

From 2008 to 2014 the art compass appeared in Manager-Magazin , in 2015 in the art magazine Weltkunst , in 2016 in the business magazine Bilanz and in 2017 in the magazine Capital. The latter had published its own ranking since 2012 under the name “Art Market Compass”.

Procedure

Solo exhibitions in over 200 internationally important museums and art institutes, participation in more than 120 important group exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and reviews in renowned art magazines such as art , Flash Art , Kunstforum international or Art in America are measured and assessed . In addition, the purchases of the major museums count as “points of fame”. Subjective evaluations such as quality, intellectual standards or aesthetics are not taken into account.

Additional ranking lists provide information about the point winners, the novices among the 100 greats, the climbers of the year and the position winners with the greatest leaps in rank. The “immortals” like Andy Warhol , Joseph Beuys , Louise Bourgeois and Sigmar Polke have their own ranking in the “Olymp”.
