The SPD lost 15.9 percentage points, the CDU gained almost the same number of votes. With a gain of 9.1 percentage points, the FDP succeeded in re-entering the state parliament. The PDS improved its result only insignificantly. The DVU, which received 12.9% of the vote in 1998, did not run again. The FDVP, split off from the DVU and formed its own parliamentary group with nine and later six members since 2000, clearly failed with 0.8%.

The CDU won 48 of the 49 constituencies and thus won eight overhang seats . According to the Saxony-Anhalt state election law, the same number of compensatory mandates was added, so that the number of members in the new state parliament increased from 99 to 115.

Consequences

CDU and FDP formed a black-yellow coalition, Wolfgang Böhmer (CDU) became the new Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt ( Böhmer I cabinet ).
