The Langstrasse quarter (or Langstrasse quarter) is a quarter in Zurich's District 4 and is named after the Langstrasse that crosses the quarter.

However, the term Langstrasse district is often used not only for the statistical quarter, but for the entire strip to the left and right of Langstrasse, which extends to Limmatplatz in the middle of the commercial school district .

The district has the second highest proportion of foreigners (2007: 40.9%) of all urban districts and a high proportion of people of working age. Children and pensioners are underrepresented. The high proportion of old buildings is also noticeable.

Significant buildings are the Sihlpost , the former military barracks and their area and the Volkshaus directly on Helvetiaplatz .

Since the 1970s, the red-light district and the associated drug trade had developed strongly in the quarter . In order to counter the problems, the city council carried out the “Langstrasse PLUS” project from 2001 to 2011. It resulted in an improvement in public order and security. For example, while there used to be more marginalized people than residents at the bakery , the green area is now used again by families, young people and visitors.

With Europaallee , a new connection is currently being built in the direction of Bahnhofstrasse near the train station: the college of education, which is currently under construction, will create 1,800 places for students, around 400 apartments and 6,000 workplaces as well as retail and catering facilities are planned.

The quarter has the quietest residential areas south of Stauffacherstrasse.
