Laura Peel (born September 29, 1989 in Canberra ) is an Australian freestyle skier . She specializes in the aerials (jumping) discipline. In 2015 she became world champion.

biography

Peel began her sports career as an artistic gymnast before switching to freestyle jumping. She made her debut in the World Cup on January 16, 2011 in Mont Gabriel , where she reached 15th place and immediately won her first World Cup points. At the 2011 World Championships in Deer Valley , she jumped to 11th place. The best result in her premiere season was a sixth place. The first World Cup podium was achieved on January 15, 2012 with 3rd place in Mont Gabriel; it was only her fifth participation in the World Cup. She celebrated her only World Cup victory so far on February 17, 2012 on the Kreischberg . In the 2012/13 World Cup season , she jumped to second place twice, while she was eighth at the 2013 World Championships in Voss .

In the World Cup season 2013/14 was a fifth place Peel's best result at the Olympic Winter Games 2015 in Sochi she jumped to seventh place. After a rather moderate start to the 2014/15 World Cup season , she surprisingly won the gold medal at the 2015 World Championships . The following winter she was unable to compete due to an injury. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season she made her comeback; her best result this winter was a third place. At the 2017 World Championships in Sierra Nevada , she again came eighth. During the 2017/18 World Cup season, she finished third twice, and fifth at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .

In the 2018/19 World Cup , Peel managed to win and another podium, and in fourth place at the 2019 World Cup , she just missed a medal. Two more victories as well as a second and third place each came in the 2019/20 World Cup , which was enough for her to take first place in the discipline ranking.
