Immanuel Lazarus Fuchs (born May 5, 1833 in Moschin , Province of Posen , † April 26, 1902 in Berlin ) was a German mathematician .

Life

Fuchs studied mathematics at the University of Berlin from the summer semester of 1854 , a. a. with Ernst Eduard Kummer and Karl Weierstrass , and received his doctorate on August 2, 1858 with Weierstrass. On March 19, 1859 he passed the examination for the higher teaching post. From 1860 he worked as an assistant teacher and from March 26, 1864 to May 23, 1867 as a teacher in Berlin. a. at the Friedrichs-Werderschen trade school.

In August 1865 he completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin and was appointed associate professor on December 7, 1866. From May 23, 1867 he was also a teacher at the artillery and engineering school in Berlin .

On February 3, 1869, Fuchs became a full professor at the University of Greifswald . From March 22, 1869 he was also a lecturer at the Agricultural Academy Eldena .

On January 23, 1874, he became a full professor at the University of Göttingen .

On January 8, 1875, he succeeded Leo Koenigsberger as a full professor at the University of Heidelberg and co-director of the Mathematical-Physical Seminar.

In the summer semester of 1884 he returned to the University of Berlin as the successor to Ernst Kummer as a full professor, where he led the mathematics seminar together with Leopold Kronecker until 1891 . In 1899 he was rector of the Berlin University.

Fuchs died in Berlin on April 26, 1902. He was buried in Schöneberg in the St. Matthew Cemetery . The former honorary grave of the city of Berlin is located in field H.

His son Richard Fuchs was also a mathematician.

Act

Fuchs dealt with the areas of function theory , differential geometry and calculus of variations . He dealt mainly with algebraic and function-theoretical problems as well as especially the theory of homogeneous linear differential equations of the nth order in complexes with analytical coefficient functions ( Fuchs' differential equations ).
