economy

Le Bémont is a predominantly agricultural village with a lot of pasture land and important horse breeding . Outside of the primary sector, however, there are only a few jobs in local small businesses. Many workers are therefore commuters.

The municipality is located on the main road from Delémont to La Chaux-de-Fonds . On May 21, 1904, the railway line of the Régional Saignelégier – Glovelier , a predecessor of the Chemins de fer du Jura , opened with a train station in Le Bémont.

history

The village is first mentioned in 1330 as Le Belmont . It belonged to the dominion of Freiberge, which was subordinate to the Principality of Basel . From 1793 to 1815, Le Bémont belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont-Terrible , from 1800 connected to the Département Haut-Rhin . By decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern in 1815 and on January 1, 1979 to the newly founded canton of Jura.

Attractions

In the pasture north of the hamlet of La Bosse there is a chapel, newly built in 1898 in neo -Gothic style, which is dedicated to the nun Jeanne Froidevaux . Ecclesiastically, however, Le Bémont was dependent on Montfaucon until 1629 and since then on Saignelégier . Also worth seeing are the whitewashed typical farms of the High Jura with a large roof area. The uniform townscape of La Bosse, with its 17th to 19th century farmhouses, is one of the most beautiful in the canton of Jura.
