Lajoux is a municipality in the Franches-Montagnes district in the canton of Jura in Switzerland .
geography
Lajoux is 960 m above sea level. M. , 11 km east-northeast of the district capital Saignelégier ( linear distance ). The village extends in a trough on the Jura plateau of the eastern Freiberge (French Freiberge ).
The area of the 12.4 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating plateau of the Plateaujura, on which boggy, mostly above-ground drainage-free depressions alternate with limestone peaks . Extensive Jura pastures with large spruce trees standing individually or in groups, as well as some forest areas, occupy the central and southwestern part of Lajoux. In the south, the municipality extends to the edge of the Les Embreux moor and to the height of Les Combes ( the highest point in Lajoux at 1063 m above sea level ) and the northern slope of the Haut de Béroie . North of the height of Chu des Prières , the erosion valley Envers des Combes sinks into the plateau, which lies in the catchment area of the Tabeillon brook . The Combe des Beusses valley begins northeast of Lajoux , a left side valley of the Sorne in which there are several ponds. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was settled, 33% forest and woodland, 62% agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Lajoux includes the hamlets of Les Vacheries de Lajoux ( 980 m above sea level ), Le Paigre ( 990 m above sea level ) and Fornet-Dessus ( 973 m above sea level ), all on the plateau of the Freiberg mountains, as well as numerous Single yards. Neighboring municipalities of Lajoux are Les Genevez , Montfaucon , Saint-Brais and Saulcy in the canton of Jura and Rebévelier , Petit-Val and Saicourt in the canton of Bern .

With 673 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Lajoux is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Jura. 94.4% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.1% German-speaking and 0.5% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Lajoux was 571 in 1850 and 610 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century it decreased to 491 people by 1980. Since then, the population has increased significantly again.

Lajoux is still an agricultural village with dairy farming and cattle breeding . There are other jobs in the areas of watchmaking and mechanics; The Girolle , the rotary knife for Tête de Moine cheese , is also made in Lajoux .

The municipality is located off the major thoroughfares on the cantonal road from Glovelier to Tramelan . Lajoux is connected to public transport by the bus line that runs on this route.
history
The village was first mentioned in 1404 as La Joux Mertenat . The first mention of the hamlet Fornet-Dessus, however, dates back to 1181. Remains of smelting furnaces from the 14th and 15th centuries confirm the smelting of iron during the Middle Ages in the municipality of Lajoux. The village was under the Bellelay Monastery . From 1793 to 1815 it belonged to France and was initially part of the Mont-Terrible department , but from 1800 it was linked to the Haut-Rhin department . As a result of the decision of the Congress of Vienna , Lajoux came to the Canton of Bern in the Moutier district in 1815 . The inhabitants of Lajoux voted in Juraplebisziten always for the creation of the Canton of Jura . As a border municipality in the district of Moutier, Lajoux decided in the referendum of September 7, 1975 in favor of the canton of Jura, transferred to the Franches-Montagnes district in 1976 and came with this on January 1, 1979 to the newly founded canton of Jura.
Attractions
The parish church of Lajoux was built in 1809. It has glass windows by Coghuf as well as a remarkable altarpiece from the Schongau School , created around 1500.
