The village of Leitelshain was named "Lutoldishayn" in 1301. Until the 19th century , the manor over the place was partly owned by the manors Gablenz , Kitschergut and Schweinsburg .

Leitelshain originally belonged to the beautiful burg care Crimmitschau, the 1413 wettinisch was in the 16th century in the Saxon Office Zwickau opened. Until 1856, Leitelshain belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Zwickau. In 1856 the place was affiliated with the Crimmitschau court office and in 1875 with the Zwickau administration .

On July 1, 1906, it was incorporated into Crimmitschau. At that time Leitelshain had 4036 inhabitants. Since the middle of the 19th century, a number of companies in the textile industry were founded in Leitelshain. The best known is the cloth factory Gebr. Pfau founded in 1859 . Today's museum is the largest fully equipped full cloth factory in Central Europe.

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Leitelshain became part of the town of Crimmitschau in 1952 and became part of Werdau in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Werdau from 1990 and in 1994 in the Zwickauer Land district or 2008 in the district of Zwickau.
