Life

Youth and careers with tATu

She was born in 1984 as the daughter of the musician Sergei Wassiljewitsch Katin and the housewife Inessa Vsevolodovna Katina and grew up in the Krylatskoje district . She has a half-sister, Katja, and a half-brother, Iwan. At the age of eight she started piano training . In 1994 she became a member of the Russian children's ensemble "Авеню" (Avenue). At the age of 11 she was accepted into the very successful youth music group "Непоседы" (Neposedy), of which Volkova was already a member. With “Neposedy” she also appeared once in Italy and had two appearances in a Russian television series .

After she left Neposedy at the age of 14, Katina was cast in 1999 by Ivan Shapovalov . Originally anti-war concerts against the bombing of Yugoslavia by NATO were planned with Katina as the solo artist, but after a short time it was decided to form a duo. Together with Julija Wolkowa, tATu was created in the same year. In the group, she took on the role of the cheeky, red-haired girl - the counterpart to the boyish Wolkowa. Katina easily fit into this role, as she is a much quieter guy than Volkova in her private life. At press meetings abroad, Katina also took on the role of interpreter because, unlike Wolkowa, she already spoke English very well .

tATu's Russian-language publications achieved great popularity in Russia and Eastern Europe, and from the end of 2002 the duo also enjoyed worldwide success with English-language hits. After the first success there were differences within the duo. They broke up with their manager and producer Shapovalov, and Volkova became pregnant. Then there were rumors that tATu was breaking up and Katina started a solo career. But shortly after the birth of Wolkowa's daughter in September 2004, the two went back to the studio and in 2005 released their third studio album Dangerous and Moving . With the single All About Us , which reached the top 10 of the charts in most European countries, the group made a worldwide comeback. In 2008 tATu's fifth studio album Весёлые Улыбки was released , a year later the English version Waste Management , which was successful in Russia and South America, but for the first time in tATu's band history did not produce a European hit.

In 2003, Katina was voted tenth in the “Hot 100” of the most erotic women by readers of Maxim magazine .

Solo career

Katina has been working harder on her solo career since the spring of 2009, after the work on the tATu project was reduced and finally ended in 2011. On June 17, 2011, she released her first solo single Never Forget on the Mexican radio station FM Tu Monterrey . On August 2nd, the accompanying music video was leaked ; the original release date was August 15th. The music video belonging to the single was voted the best music video of 2011 by a viewer voting on MTV Russia . A remix of Never Forget by Dave Audé , with whom she had already worked as a tATu singer between 2001 and 2005, was released in 2012 and made it into the charts in several countries, including Greece , Italy and Brazil . After eight weeks in the US dance / club charts , the single reached the top position, which no Russian solo artist had achieved before Katina. In autumn 2013 she reached the US hit parade again with the single Lift Me Up . On March 17th, 2014 Katina released her first live album European Fan Weekend 2013 Live , which was recorded at a concert in Cologne. On November 18, 2014, she finally released her debut studio album This Is Who I Am .

After the birth of her son in May 2015, she withdrew from the public for some time to focus on her role as a mother. The Spanish album Esta Soy Yo , which includes songs from Katina's debut album This Is Who I Am in Spanish and is dedicated to her Spanish-speaking fans, was released in July 2016. With the release of her single Silent Hills on November 22, 2017, Katina returned to the music business. The single Here I Go Again, recorded in collaboration with Daddy Mercury , followed on December 25, 2017 . Katina then turned to work on a Russian-language album. On March 4, 2018, Katina released the first single of the planned Russian-language album После нас (Posle Nas; Nach uns ), which recalls the time together with Wolkowa as tATu. In the months that followed, Katina published other Russian-language songs. On July 26, 2019, the album Моно (Mono) was finally released .

Private life

Katina began studying psychology in Moscow, which, according to media reports, she dropped out to market Dangerous and Moving . She describes herself as very religious and goes to church regularly, although she has been heavily criticized by the Russian Orthodox Church for her commitment to gays and lesbians .

On August 13, 2013, Katina married the Serbian - Slovenian musician Sasho Kuzmanovic (Saša Kuzmanović), with whom she had been in a relationship since 2010. On May 22, 2015, she gave birth to their son Alexander. After living and working in Los Angeles , California ( USA ) for a number of years , she returned to her hometown Moscow in the spring of 2015 shortly before the birth of her son.
