Leonhard Kaupisch (born September 1, 1878 in Bitterfeld , † September 26, 1945 in Weimar ) was a German officer , most recently general of the artillery in World War II .

Life

Early years and World War I

Kaupisch joined the foot artillery regiment "von Dieskau" (Silesian) No. 6 on March 18, 1898 as a flag junior , where he served as a company officer and battalion adjutant until the end of March 1911. During this time Kaupisch attended the United Artillery and Engineering School in Charlottenburg from October 1901 to September 1903 and also the Prussian War Academy from October 1907 to July 1910 . On April 1, 1911, he was assigned to the General Staff . He was transferred here on March 22, 1913 when he was promoted to captain . On January 27, 1914, he moved to the General Staff of the XI. Army Corps . It was there that Kaupisch experienced the outbreak of the First World War .

On February 11, 1915, he transferred to the General Staff of the 79th Reserve Division , where he remained until October 22, 1916. During this time, from October 3 to November 15, 1915, Kaupisch was also entrusted with the command of the 2nd Division of the 4th Baden Field Artillery Regiment No. 66 . Kaupisch then served from October 23, 1916 to July 12, 1917 in the General Staff of the 8th Army and then until January 15, 1918 in the General Staff of the General Command z. b. V. No. 56. Interwar period

Promotions

From January 2 to the end of September 1919, Kaupisch served again in the General Staff of the XI. Army Corps. Subsequently, on October 1, 1919, he was transferred to the staff of Reichswehr Group Command 2 of the Provisional Reichswehr in Kassel . On February 1, 1923, Kaupisch was transferred to the 7th (Bavarian) Artillery Regiment , where he was employed in the staff of the I. Department until the end of November 1923. He was then commander of the I. Department until the end of March 1926. After that, Kaupisch left the regiment and was course director at the Jüterbog artillery school until October 1927 . On November 1, 1927, he rose to Chief of Staff of the 2nd Division . He was appointed Artillery Leader V ( Stuttgart ) on February 1, 1930. Kaupisch held this position until he retired from military service on September 30, 1932.

Kaupisch's reactivation for the Luftwaffe , which was under construction, took place on April 1, 1934. Here he initially served as President of the Higher Aviation Office in Berlin until February 28, 1935, from where he was promoted to Commander in Air District II (Berlin) on March 1, 1935 . Second World War

His second reactivation took place on January 1, 1939, when Kaupisch was initially available in the army at Wehrkreis-Kommando III until August 25, 1939. A short time later he became the commander of Border Guard Section Command 1 ( Neustettin , Pomerania ). During the invasion of Poland acted Kaupisch in which bears his name and including the Border Patrol command section 1 -containing Corps Kaupisch as commander. On September 1, 1940, Kaupisch was appointed General of the Artillery by renaming his previous rank. On April 9, 1942, he gave command of his XXXI. Army corps and the following day he joined the Führerreserve at the Army High Command . He stayed there until June 30, 1942, when he finally retired from military service. There was no reactivation until the end of the war.
