Leopold I , also Liutpold , called the brave or the strong († October 26, 1129 ), from the Traungau family , a branch of the Otakare , was Margrave of Styria from 1122 to 1129.

Leopold was the son of Ottokar (Otakar) II. And Elisabeth of Austria, the daughter of Margrave Leopold II. He was married to the Welfin Sophie von Bayern († around 1145), daughter of Heinrich the Black , aunt of Emperor Friedrich since 1123 or 24 Barbarossa .

He got his nickname from the church for the support of the archbishops of Salzburg against Emperor Heinrich V in the investiture dispute .

As the main heir to Heinrich III. , the last Eppensteiner and cousin of his father, he inherited his rich allode from him in 1122 , the provincia Graslupp , that is the entire Neumarkt and Sankt Lambrecht area, and the Murau region , which until then had belonged to Carinthia (County of Friesach ) and now to the nascent Styria fell, the Murtal as far as Leoben and south of Bruck to Gösting , the Mürz Valley with the Mariazeller Land and the entire Voitsberg district . This legacy initiated the expansion of the country's rule.

Together with Hartberg, Leopold established the first Traungauer- Pfalz and his first market in the market. Another of his palaces was in Grauscharn / Pürgg. He was also Vogt of St. Lambrecht Abbey . He established the oldest Cistercian monastery in Austria in Rein (near Graz) in 1129 and co-founded the Benedictine monastery in Gleink in 1123 .

Since his son Ottokar was only 4 years old when Leopold died, Sophie ruled Styria for many years.

In September 2006, during renovation work in the chapter house of Rein Abbey , his grave was discovered alongside the graves of other ecclesiastical and secular rulers.
