Leopoldo José Cardinal Brenes Solórzano (born March 7, 1949 in Ticuantepe , Nicaragua ) is Archbishop of Managua .

Life

Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminaries of Managua and Mexico City . He graduated from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome with a degree in Catholic theology . Brenes Solórzano received on 16 August 1974, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was pastor of the parishes of Tisma , La Asunción and San Pio X in Managua. Subsequently, Leopoldo José Brenes Solórzano became Episcopal Vicar for Pastoral Affairs and Deputy Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Managua .

On February 13, 1988 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Maturba and auxiliary bishop in Managua. He received his episcopal ordination on March 19 of the same year by the Archbishop of Managua, Cardinal Miguel Obando Bravo SDB ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Nicaragua , Archbishop Paolo Giglio , and the Archbishop of San Salvador , Arturo Rivera y Damas SDB. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Brenes Solórzano on October 8, 2009 as a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America . Pope Francis confirmed the appointment on January 15, 2014.

In the solemn consistory on February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gioacchino ai Prati di Castello in the college of cardinals . On May 22, 2014 he called him to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace .
