S-Bahn in Austria

The S-Bahn Upper Austria is a S-Bahn system introduced on December 11, 2016 in the greater Linz area in Upper Austria . The first step was to standardize the timetable with exactly the same departure minutes and to close gaps in the intervals as well as the introduction of the following line names :

line course stretch Operational management vehicles length
S-Bahn Upper Austria Linz Hbf - Enns - St. Valentin - Steyr - Garsten Westbahn and Rudolfsbahn ÖBB Series 4024 and 4744 approx. 47 km
S-Bahn Upper Austria Linz Hbf - Wels Hbf
(mostly as a regional train to Salzburg / Freilassing )
Western Railway ÖBB Series 4024 and 4744 approx. 24 km
S-Bahn Upper Austria Linz central station - Pregarten Summerau Railway ÖBB Series 4024 and 4744 approx. 26 km
S-Bahn Upper Austria Linz Hbf - Traun - Kremsmünster - Kirchdorf an der Krems Pyhrnbahn ÖBB Series 4024 and 4744 approx. 51 km
S-Bahn Upper Austria Linz central station - Eferding Linz local railway Stern & Hafferl Stadler GTW approx. 24 km

The S-Bahn lines currently run every hour from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., whereby the frequency is increased during rush hour. It is planned to condense the intervals to a half-hour cycle. On some routes, however, this can only be done after the infrastructure has been expanded, particularly on the Linz - Wels and Linz Hbf - Kleinmünchen routes. The creation of the S-Bahn system was based on existing regional train lines . In the first 100 days after the introduction of the S-Bahn system, passenger numbers rose by five percent.

Planned further lines

In the longer term, the introduction of two more lines is planned:Template: future / in 5 years

  • S-Bahn Upper Austria: Mühlkreisbahn : Linz Hbf - Kleinzell
  • S-Bahn Upper Austria: Stadt-Regio-Tram: Linz Hbf - Gallneukirchen - Pregarten

Both lines were to be run from the main train station via a new City-S-Bahn line to be built in the east of the city of Linz and via the New Danube Bridge Linz to a junction at Ferihumerstraße. Shortly after the main train station, the line is to be submerged underground so that the section between Europaplatz and Derfflingerstraße via the Kepler University Hospital would run underground. The remaining part up to the Danube bridge is to be built above ground. A section would be built from the junction at Ferihumerstraße to the Mühlkreisbahnhof , which would link the Mühlkreisbahn to the main station. The city of Linz would like this section of the route to run underground through densely built-up areas, while the state of Upper Austria is holding back on the question. In the planning, the underground route is designated as optional. The Mühlkreisbahn is to be electrified as far as Kleinzell and then, including the route described from the main station to the Mühlkreisbahnhof, will be served by the S6 line. The second route branching off at Ferihumerstraße would serve the S7 and then run mainly along the Danube dam to the University of Linz , where a connection to tram lines 1 and 2 is to be made. For this purpose, a short extension of the tram from the previous terminus of the university to an S-Bahn stop to be built would be planned. The further route should run through Treffling, towards Gallneukirchen and then via Engerwitzdorf to Pregarten. The city of Gallneukirchen itself is to be connected by a branch line, although there are several variants.

The plan to connect the new light rail line with a tram line was abandoned in 2019. The rejected plan provided for the expansion of the tram axis so that trams and standard gauge trains could run there at the same time .

The new city crossing could be completed by 2026 or 2027. The city of Linz and the state of Upper Austria would like the federal government to contribute financially. The Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler is to basically ready, but refers to it currently lacks planning documents and that "the financial volume of the project for the standards of the collar is very high".
