Casertavecchia (Old Caserta)

The Counts of Caserta , a county in the southern Italian region of Campania (capital Caserta ), were closely associated with the ruling house or the papacy, the most famous of them being Richard († after 1265), the son-in-law of Emperor Frederick II . The county was a fiefdom in the Kingdom of Sicily or Kingdom of Naples since the 12th century .

In 1579 the county was elevated to a principality, sold by the last prince to the king in 1750. At the end of the 19th century, the title of count became known again through Alfons Maria of Naples-Sicily , the "pretender to the throne of Naples".
