1839 (reconstruction) One of the few, largely original, objects of its kind, evidence of a centuries-old milling tradition on site, landmark visible from afar, significant in terms of technology history and landscape design.

The Schmannewitz post mill was moved to its current location in 1839. Before that, she stood on the Almond Mountain, 1.5 km away. In 1879 it was rebuilt after a storm (the date above the flour bar refers to this). In 1924 the mill got a power connection and from 1926 an electric motor. The mill operation was given up in 1960. A first refurbishment should have taken place in 1983. During the last renovation in 2004, the mill received a new outer skin and new wings. The codend, stairs and windows are also new. The trestle, the frame of the mill case and the technology have been preserved in their original form.

  4. ↑ Post mill Schmannewitz:
The mill in Schmannewitz is a post mill. This type, which has been known to have been known since the Middle Ages, is also known as the "Teutsche Windmühle" because it was particularly popular in the German-speaking area. The specimen to be assessed here and moved to its current location in 1839 consists, like all post windmills, of the trestle, the covered mill box and the winged cross. The trestle, after which the mill takes its name, serves as the supporting foot of the system. It consists of stone foundations, the threshold cross, the trestle frame (storm straps), the saddle and the house tree. The flour bar rests on the vertical house tree, pivoted. The mill box is built around this statically essential construction. Also important is the codend attached to the mill box, with which you can turn the mill into the wind. The mill case of the post mill in Schmannewitz consists of two floors. The lower floor is dominated by the house tree and the flour bar as well as a roller clock, while the majority of the technical equipment, such as the comb wheel, rod shaft, vertical shaft, sack lift with spindle, braking device, grinder, oat crusher is concentrated above. The rotary movements of the windmill blades (rods) were transmitted from below to the two gears (grinding and grist) via the rod shaft, the comb wheel, the vertical shaft and the gearbox.
The monumental property of the mill in Schmannewitz results on the one hand from its exemplary value for the development of milling with post mills, which is widespread in Germany, especially in the 19th century, and on the other hand from its rarity. It is one of the few windmills in Saxony that has been preserved with largely complete equipment and can thus convey the functionality more clearly than other such objects. Added to this is the landscape design significance that it has as a landmark that can be seen from afar.
