Landmark and location of the city of Weikersheim

The list of cultural monuments in Weikersheim includes architectural and art monuments of the city of Weikersheim , which are recorded in the " Directory of immovable architectural and art monuments and objects to be inspected " of the Baden-Württemberg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments . This directory is not public and can only be viewed if there is a “legitimate interest”. The following list is therefore not exhaustive. It is essentially based on the published monument conservation value plan . The article is part of the higher-level list of cultural monuments in the Main-Tauber district . Legally binding information is only available on request from the Lower Monument Protection Authority of the city of Weikersheim.

Small monuments such as wayside shrines, statues and wayside crosses have been preserved in large numbers in the city area. The reason lies in the agricultural structure that has existed since the Middle Ages. In modern times there was no densification of settlement and industry as in the metropolitan areas, so that these cultural monuments were largely preserved in the open air .

Urban history

The first, village settlement was an old imperial estate, which was mentioned in a document from the Fulda monastery in 837 . As lords of Wighartesheim, the lords of Hohenlohe were first documented in 1153. Around this time they founded the already mentioned moated castle in the area of today's castle.

In 1313 the castle settlement received city rights and was fortified. It was initially the allodial property of the Lords of Hohenlohe, from 1345 fiefdom of the Fulda monastery and from 1392 fiefdom of the diocese of Würzburg . After numerous other pledges, Weikersheim passed into the permanent possession of the Hohenlohe family in 1468 and was expanded into a residential town between the end of the 16th and mid-18th centuries.

Count Siegfried initiated the baroque transformation of the town in 1680, which culminated in the redesign of the market square. From then on, the square assumed a joint function between the manorial and the bourgeois area - the old town center of Weikersheim, which extends along the main street and east of the parish church. The first city expansion took place in the second half of the 17th century under Count Julius zu Neuenstein, who had houses built on the bastion wall in front of the northern gate. The construction of the southern, unpaved suburb in the area of today's Schulstrasse and Karl-Ludwig-Strasse began in the middle of the 18th century.

City fortifications

f1Georeferencing Map with all coordinates of the cultural monuments of the urban fortifications: OSM

The city wall, which was built from 1313, is still visible in many areas today, and in many cases it also serves as the rear of the existing buildings. Of the old city gates, the “Lower Gate” in the north, the so-called Gänsturm, is still preserved today, while the “Upper Gate” in the south is already in place at the beginning of the 19th century. In terms of building history, the city wall and prison tower in the Am Graben district, which is barely impaired in terms of its structural fabric, is particularly important. Together with the church tower and the medieval keep (raised in 1600 and 1680 respectively) of the castle, on the one hand it elevates the two opposite poles of the city and the castle, while at the same time it is an essential part of the southern and southwestern city skyline.
