List of ironclad ships and monitors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list of ironclads and monitors includes between 1859 and the first half of the 1880s built ironclads and monitors and similar vessels with armor and large-caliber weapons, the ship types below can be assigned.

Ship types

  • I - "Ironclad": Ironclad ships for use on the high seas
  • C - "Coastal defense ship": armored ships for the defense of coastlines, estuaries and ports

For these ship types, the design is specified by the additions Br - "Broadside": broadside ships , Cb - "Central battery": casemate ships , Tu - "Turret": tower ships and Bb - "Barbette": barbed ships. Combinations of these types are possible and have occasionally been implemented.

Furthermore, there were specialized warship types of typical design in the period under review:

  • R - "Ram": Armored ram ships , which were designed with a reinforced ram bow especially for ramming
  • TR - "Turret Ram": Armored ram ships that carried large-caliber guns in a rotating tower in addition to the ram
  • M - "Monitor": monitors with low freeboard and gun turrets, named after the archetype of this class of ship that emerged during the Civil War
  • BM - "Breastwork Monitor": parapet monitors in which the turrets standing on deck were additionally protected behind a parapet
  • RM - "Ram Monitor": Monitors with a ram bow

Finally, the originally unarmored ship types of cruisers and gunboats were also provided with armor:

  • ACr - "Armored cruiser" armored cruiser with belt and deck armor, mainly for overseas use
  • AGb - "Armored gunboat": Armored cannon boats , mainly for coastal defense

Notes on the list

  • The ship name is the one that was used for the respective owner country when the ship was commissioned. Later name changes or previously used names are listed under comments .
  • The year of launch is indicated. The year of first commissioning may differ from this.
  • The period of service is understood to mean the period between the takeover of the ship and the deletion from the ship register or the loss of the ship. The period of service can also include periods of inactivity.
  • Under the country , the state is called, whose flag the ship. Ships that belonged to different countries in the course of their existence are listed several times.
