Direct dial

The Israeli head of government was directly elected three times by the electorate. The direct election was supposed to simplify the formation of a government, but led to a weakening of the major parties and further fragmentation of the Knesset . Eventually they returned to traditional parliamentary government formation.

  • May 29, 1996: Benjamin Netanyahu 50.5%, Shimon Peres 49.5%.
  • May 17, 1999: Ehud Barak 56.1%, Benjamin Netanyahu 43.9%.
  • February 6, 2001: Ariel Sharon 62.4%, Ehud Barak 37.6%.
