List of Prime Ministers of Israel
When the State of Israel was founded in 1948 , it adopted a parliamentary system of government , with a Prime Minister ( Hebrew ראש הממשלה Rosh HaMemschala “head of government”) at the head of the government and a state president as head of state with predominantly representative tasks.

The Israeli head of government was directly elected three times by the electorate. The direct election was supposed to simplify the formation of a government, but led to a weakening of the major parties and further fragmentation of the Knesset . Eventually they returned to traditional parliamentary government formation.
- May 29, 1996: Benjamin Netanyahu 50.5%, Shimon Peres 49.5%.
- May 17, 1999: Ehud Barak 56.1%, Benjamin Netanyahu 43.9%.
- February 6, 2001: Ariel Sharon 62.4%, Ehud Barak 37.6%.
