List of Palatine passenger cars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In progress This list provides an overview of thepassenger cars usedby the Palatinate Railways between 1846 and 1920, including the saloon and baggage cars. Both the standard gauge and the narrow-gauge vehicles are listed. The dates selected for the list correspond roughly to the ones given in the wagon registers. The selection of the time segments for specifying the wagon numbers results from the numbering periods relevant for the Palatinate railways

  • from 1846 to approx. 1875, separate number ranges of the individual railway companies of the Pfalzbahnen
  • from 1875 new numbering scheme, across all companies
Numbers 1 to 3000 for Ludwigsbahn cars
Numbers 3001 to 5000 for Northern Railway wagons
Numbers 5001 to 5999 for Maximiliansbahn cars
Numbers> 6000 Continuation for Ludwigsbahn wagons and finally for all new additions without ownership subdivision. Wagons that were moved from Bavaria on the right bank of the Rhine largely retained their wagon numbers.
  • From 1923 new numbering scheme after the takeover by the Deutsche Reichsbahn for the standard gauge vehicles, the narrow gauge vehicles kept their numbers until the end of their service life

With the takeover by the royal. Bavarian state railways at the beginning of 1909, in contrast to the freight cars, were not associated with renumbering. Details of the wagon numbers in each era can be found on the wagon details pages.

Compartment car

As with most of the other German state railways, the compartment car was the most numerous and important type of car on the Palatinate Railways . In the Palatinate, too, the development of two, three and four-axle vehicles was advanced. The first three-axle vehicles were delivered around 1890 and still had the skylight roof introduced for the two-axle vehicles from 1880, whereas the three-axle vehicles that followed had a high-arched barrel roof. Just like the other southern German railway administrations, the management of the Palatinate Railways had not found a taste for the four-axle compartment car. As with the neighboring Grand Ducal Baden State Railways , the purchase of the four-axle compartment was also initiated by the Pfalzbahn due to the need to balance the wagons with the neighboring railways, especially the Prussian ones. A special feature of the Palatine (and Bavarian) compartment cars was the equipment of individual car types with open brakeman's seats, the so-called "free seat brakes". However, these were only carried out in larger numbers when, due to the fact that the passenger trains were equipped with continuous compressed air brakes, it was no longer necessary to put brakes on the hand brakes.

The individual wagon types are listed in the following tables. The information on compartments, seats and toilets always relate to the original condition of the car, which in some cases has been changed by conversion.

Express train car

After D-trains - including international ones - had been running through the Palatinate since 1895, the Palatinate Railways needed to procure suitable rolling stock in order to be able to provide the required proportion of wagons as part of the wagon balancing with the neighboring railway companies.

Common to all Palatinate express train cars were the car crossings protected with bellows, a continuous side aisle and the barrel roof typical of southern German railways. With the exception of a few third-class compartments in the CCü carriages facing the side aisle, the compartments were locked with sliding doors. Two cars that were first purchased in 1897 were initially equipped with kitchen equipment (so-called buffet cars), but these were given up again in the following year in favor of seats. The ABBü procured from 1907 had the long bogie with 3500 mm wheelbase, which was introduced in Bavaria on the right bank of the Rhine at the same time, with which a smoother running was achieved.

Baggage cart

In contrast to most of the German regional railways (but just like the Baden neighboring railways), the Pfalzbahnen did not differentiate their baggage cars into those for passenger and freight trains. As a rule, the older cars were used as company cars for the train driver and the staff of freight trains.

Mail car

The rail mail cars of the Palatinate Railways, like the mail cars of the Royal Bavarian State Railways, were railway-owned, but had signs with the inscription "Königl. Bayer. Post Office". After the nationalization of the Palatinate Railways, 13 rail mail cars were transferred from the network on the right bank of the Rhine to the Palatinate in 1911, and another followed in 1918. In addition, between 1911 and 1913, three new Bavarian-style cars were put into service for the Palatinate network.

Local railway car

In the years 1882 to 1884, the Pfalzbahnen only put 14 standard-gauge local railcars into service, which were intended for the Lautertalbahn . The cars were designed as through cars with open end platforms. After 1909, the state railway administration significantly increased the number of vehicles and transferred 45 Bavarian-style local railway cars to the Palatinate.

Narrow gauge vehicles

For the three meter-gauge local railways of the Palatinate Railways, 157 passenger cars and 25 baggage cars were built between 1889 and 1929, 15 of which had a post compartment. External features of the cars purchased between 1889 and 1907 were the flat roof and the windows arranged in pairs in the full compartments. In contrast, the cars procured from 1911 had a barrel roof and wide windows. The vehicles were not given new numbers after 1909.

Remarks

  1. a b c d e Procurement for the account of the Ludwig Railway Company
  2. a b c d e f g h i j k l The sheet number from the last and most extensive Palatinate car register from 1913 is used to clearly identify the car. Since the wagon types were consecutively numbered in each wagon directory, different sheet numbers were used in older wagon directories for the same wagon type. It is therefore not a number of a sample drawing.
  3. Generic name in the network on the right bank of the Rhine: Pg.
  4. Class designation P according to the Palatinate car directory from 1913, should correctly be called Pü.
  5. Class designation P according to the Palatinate car register from 1913, should correctly be called Pi.
