List of Bavarian passenger cars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list covers the Bavarian passenger cars , both of the Royal Bavarian State Railways and the Bavarian Group Administration of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRG) in the period from 1844 to 1930.

The list is based on the K.Bay.Sts.B. of March 31, 1897 and March 31, 1913 as well as the sketchbook for passenger and baggage cars of the DRG from 1930. The structure corresponds to that of the car directories.

Royal carriage trains

Royal carriage train from 1847

This wagon train originally consisted of four three-axle wagons which were still built as coupee wagons with a Betard compartment at one end of the wagon according to the wagon building tradition of that time. During the renovation in the years 1861 to 1863, the wagons were converted into two-axle vehicles and received "intercommunication" - i.e. H. the possibility of passing from one car to the other by means of open transition platforms, which were secured by railings and chains between the cars.

Royal carriage train from 1860

The wagons are listed in the order shown in a drawing from the traffic archive in Nuremberg. A photograph from the train station in Prien on the occasion of the state visit of the Shah of Persia in August 1889 shows that the royal train actually ran in this sequence. King Ludwig II made a single tour of his kingdom with this train, from November 10th to December 10th, 1866 after the German-German war. He visited the war-torn provinces of Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia and Lower Franconia. The route led from Munich via Bayreuth, Hof and Bamberg to Aschaffenburg. After a visit to the Grand Ducal Court in Darmstadt, we returned to Munich via Würzburg and Nuremberg. It was not until around 1870 that the magnificent design of the exterior and interior fittings, which is still known today from the museum cars, was carried out according to the exact specifications of the king.

Royal carriage train for "Incognito Reisen"

King Ludwig II used this train, consisting of a total of three carriages, for his trips abroad, in which he often traveled under the pseudonym "Graf Berg". In contrast to the official coaches of the royal train, these were painted in the standard color of the Bavarian passenger coaches (green). All three cars were assigned to the court car park in 1886 and from 1892 to the saloon car park for general traffic. The technical equipment of the wagons also made it possible to transfer to foreign railway administrations, including France and Switzerland.

Mail car

In contrast to Prussia, the state railroad owned the mail wagons in the Kingdom of Bavaria. This only changed with the incorporation of the Bavarian Post Administration into the Reich Postal Administration on April 1, 1920. However, procurement remained independent until October 31, 1933 (dissolution of the Bavarian group administration).

Baggage cart

Originally in Bavaria only those wagons were called luggage wagons that were used exclusively for the transport of luggage without a service compartment for the train attendants (generic symbol "J"). The cars with a service compartment had the designation Dienstwagen (type "D"). It was not until the end of the 19th century that the name baggage cart was introduced for both types. Depending on the type of use - whether for passenger or freight trains - the generic symbol P or Pg was then used.

Baggage car of the Bavarian Eastern Railway

Together with the BOB (Royal Privileged Actiengesellschaft der Bavarian Eastern Railways) , the Bavarian state also took over their fleet of passenger cars and freight cars. This also included two-axle baggage carts.

Three-axle baggage cart

The total of 45 cars of the series from 1892 according to sheet 220 had been procured for use with the three-axle compartment cars that were then new to use. They therefore also had continuous running boards and handrails on the sides. For the through cars purchased from 1894, three-axle baggage cars with the same axle base also had to be purchased. For this purpose, a total of 171 wagons with uniform floor plans and dimensions were built in a total of three construction lots with sheets 226, 227 and 228.

Branch line and local line standard gauge

On April 21, 1884, the Bavarian State Parliament passed the so-called Local Railway Act . This should help to develop the rural area in terms of traffic. In addition to a lighter superstructure and inexpensive high-rise structures, a simplified construction and cheaper construction of vehicles and wagons should also serve this purpose. The concept worked so well that up to the transition to the Reichsbahn, around 40% of the Bavarian rail network was local railways.

The local railway wagons received an "L" as their generic symbol and were listed as branch line wagons in the wagon registers. Because of the older locomotives used, they had suction air brakes (Hardy system) until the turn of the century. The air brake was not introduced across the board until 1925.

1st generation local railway car

At the beginning, usable old material from the main railways was used, but between 1880 and 1886 a first generation of wagons specially designed for local rail operations was put into operation. These had a short, wood-paneled car body and a wheelbase of 3,650 millimeters. The open passages were only secured for staff and only with chains.

Local rail cars for light trains

These car types were developed for use with the light two-axle motor locomotives such as the "glass box". The wagons were built between 1905 and 1911 and were not suitable for military transport. They had open end platforms with local railway appearances and open crossings. The cars were equipped with a hand-spindle brake on the platform, Westinghouse brakes, kerosene lamps and steam heating.

98 727 with local train

In 1909 a new design was introduced, which was also procured in a slightly modified form by the Reichsbahn for the Bavarian network until 1929. Only then was the construction of special types of wagons for operation on local railways stopped. The compartment sizes of the individual wagon types remained the same over the entire procurement period. They all had open end platforms, large side windows and Dixi grilles to close off the stairs. This also had no more foldable local railway appearances.

Heating car

After the introduction of continuous steam heating, heating cars were required to heat passenger trains in the cold seasons, as the existing tractors often did not have enough steam to provide enough steam for both propulsion and heating. Even if the performance of the tractor units increased continuously from the turn of the century, the demand was still there, especially for long, international passenger trains. In Bavaria in particular, due to its snowy middle and high mountain regions, the need for heating vehicles was great. A stock of 90 two-axle heating wagons can already be verified with the wagon register from 1875. This decreased to 31 cars by 1913. A short time later, with the opening of the "electrified" lines of the Mittenwaldbahn, new heating cars were procured because the electric locomotives had no boilers.
