Litberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At 65 m above sea level, the Litberg is the highest point in the Stade district . It is located about 2.5 km south of Beckdorf in the Sauensiek community . The Litberg is a small hill covered with birch , pine , oak and alder that was created as an Ice Age moraine . It forms a nature reserve on the Geest west of the Harburg mountains .

The best way to reach the Litberg is from the south from Sauensiek or from the north from Beckdorf or its Goldbeck district. From the east you can also start in the village of Regesbostel .

The summit is located directly in the forest, so you already have the best view when climbing the edge of the forest or from the 25 m high observation tower on the Litberg , which was built on the summit in October 2008 and was later renamed the Gauß tower . If the visibility is clear, you can see the Hamburg TV tower and the Köhlbrand Bridge on the horizon . Furthermore, there are beautiful views all around over the geest landscape.

history

The Litberg in the main triangular network with connection to the triangulation points Baursberg ( Blankenese ), Vahrendorf / Kiekeberg , Wilseder Berg and Stade .

Carl Friedrich Gauß was supposed to measure the Kingdom of Hanover since 1821 ( Gaußsche Landaufnahme ). He was able to overcome the problems that arose in the north German lowlands (lack of landscape surveys), among other things, with the help of the Litberg, where he set up a surveying tower in order to better target his targets in Hamburg- Altona , Hohenhorn , Elmhorst (near Visselhövede ) and Zeven . This measurement was later documented on the back of a 10 D-Mark note.

From 1949 to 1962, gravel and sand were extracted here in the opencast mine . Various boulders came to light. After the work was completed, the area was completely recultivated and left to nature, some of the boulders are near the tower and mark the summit . A metal plate with the inscription " Gauss Tower 2009" is attached to one of these .
