List of liturgical books
Liturgical books are books that are or have been used in Christian worship .
Text books
- Agende : Directory of the course of the Protestant service with the texts used
- Apostolar (Byzantine: ἀπόστολος, "Apostolos"), in the Eastern Churches with the texts to be read in the liturgy from the Acts of the Apostles and the New Testament letters
- Archieratikon with the texts for a bishop of the Byzantine rite
- Benedictives with blessing formulas and texts
- The Book of Common Prayer is used in the Anglican Church.
- The breviary or breviary or book of hours contains the texts of the prayers of the hours .
- Diakonikon with the texts, especially litanies, of an Eastern church deacon
- Diurnale , an extract from the breviary for the Horen am Tag
- Epistolar with the texts from the Old Testament and the New Testament to be read during the service outside of the Gospels (summarized: "non-evangelical pericopes")
- Gospels as a collection of the full texts of the four gospels , in today's Roman Catholic liturgy the name of the so-called evangelist .
- Evangelistary with the collection of the Gospels read out during the celebration of mass pericopes
- Euchologion with prayers for priests and bishops from the Eastern Church
- Homiliar : collection of homilies
- Lectionary : Compilation of the pericopes from the Old and New Testaments ( epistolar and evangelist ) read in Holy Mass and in the Liturgy of the Hours or in Protestant worship
- Missal (Missal): contains mainly the priestly prayers of the Holy Mass and describes the liturgical acts
- Ordines : contain instructions for worship
- Pericope book contains texts from the Old Testament , the Gospels and the letters of the Bible, which serve as the basis for the sermon
- Pontifical : the texts and descriptions contains the liturgies, which a bishop projects
- Psaltery : Book of Psalms
- Roman Ritual : contains all church celebrations, blessings and priestly official acts that are not in the Missal , the Pontifical or the breviary are listed
- Sacramentary : collection of priestly prayers up to the appearance of missals
- Serbia : liturgical books of the Serbian Orthodox Church from the 15th to 17th centuries
- Book of Hours : contains the texts of the Liturgy of the Hours
- Triodion : contains the liturgical texts of the Greek Orthodox Church from Septuagesimae until shortly before Easter
- Vespers book : an excerpt from the book of hours, which only contains the Vespers (also as a version with notes, called Vesperals )
- Ceremonials : a list of the rites during worship, as Caeremoniale episcoporum

- Graduale Novum : critical edition according to the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council (2011)
- Hymnar , Liber Hymnarius : contains hymns for the different times of the day of the Liturgy of the Hours
- Cantorals : hymn book for the reciter of the answer psalm and the call to the gospel
- Kyriale : an excerpt from the Gradual containing only the chants of the Ordinarium
- Liber Usualis : older hymn book for the Gregorian chant of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours
- Nocturnale : hymn book for the night office
- Vesperale or Vespers book: an excerpt from the book of hours, only the songs and prayers for the Church's evening prayer, the Vespers contains,
- Tropar : Collection of tropes or choir and solo pieces
history
The Constitutiones of Abbot Wilhelm von Hirsau (around 1090) name the liturgical book types Missals, Officials, Gospels, Lectionaries, Nocturnal Lessons, Antiphonaries and Graduals, then the Rule (of St. Benedict), also the Hymn and Psalter, then the Book of the Prophets, the Paul’s letters and the Book of Job, as well as a glossary, homeliar, collations and litanies, not to forget the breviary and customs, and leave the liturgical area with the mention of parchment, scroll and slip of paper, martyrology and secular books.
