Lloyd Biggle, Jr.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lloyd Burdell Biggle, Jr. (Born April 17, 1923 in Waterloo , Iowa ; † September 12, 2002 ) was an American science fiction writer and musicologist .

Life

Biggle served in the infantry for ten years from 1936 to 1946 during World War II and was wounded twice; in his last injury shortly before the end of the war near the Elbe , he suffered a shrapnel wound on his leg, which hindered him for the rest of his life. After the war, he continued his education at Wayne State University in Detroit and received his PhD in musicology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . He then taught here and at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti . In 1955 he started his own business as a freelance author.

His science fiction and detective stories, often blending both genres, introduced artistic and aesthetic themes into science fiction, often connected to the subject of music that has always been Biggles' attention. His story The Tunesmith (for example: The Soundsmith) is an example of this. Other recurring motifs in his texts are transmitters, PSI skills and the rights of underdeveloped cultures to be independent - sometimes it is the people who find themselves in the role of those left behind. He wrote five novels about the interplanetary detective "Jan Darzek", all of which apart from one also appeared in German. In the 1980s, he switched to crime stories, including new Sherlock Holmes adventures. Another science fiction novel was not published until shortly before his death.

Biggle died in 2002 at the age of 79 after a twenty year battle with leukemia .
