Logan Pyett (born May 25, 1988 in Balgonie , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with KooKoo Kouvola in the Finnish Liiga since December 2018 and plays there in the position of defender . Due to a cancer diagnosed in the fall of 2015, Pyett took a two-year break.
Career
Logan Pyett was born in Balgonie , a small town near Regina , in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan . At the beginning of his career he played for the local youth teams Balgonie Prairie Storm and Regina Pat Canadians , where he was already able to convince with his game as an attacking defender .
During the 2002/03 season he played his first two games for the Regina Pats in the high-class Canadian Junior League WHL and was part of the team's regular squad the following year. He played a solid first season and was the team's top defender with 24 points, which, however, finished last in the league.
In 2005/06 Pyett managed to establish himself among the best defenders in the league. With ten goals and 35 assists , he finished ninth in the defensive scorer list, but he had the second worst plus / minus value of his team. The Pats qualified this time for the playoffs , but failed in the first round. After the season he took part in the U18 World Championship with the Canadian junior national team. Canada had to go home without a medal after losing in the game for third place and Pyett was the fourth best scorer among defenders of the World Cup.
Despite good performance, Pyett was passed over by many teams because of his small body size for a defender in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , before he was selected with the 212th and penultimate vote by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round.
In the 2006/07 season, Pyett continued to play for the Regina Pats and had his best season to date. With 62 points in 71 games, he was fourth-best WHL defender in this category and second-best assists among the defenders of the league with 48 assists. The Pats could safely qualify for the playoffs and moved through to the second round. In the summer of 2007 he was appointed to a Canadian U20 selection, which competed in the eight-game Super Series 2007 against a Russian national team of the same age. Canada won the series with seven wins in a draw and Pyett contributed two goals and two assists.
At the beginning of the 2007/08 season he was appointed team captain of the Pats, who reached the top spot in their division in the regular season, but failed in the first round of the playoffs. As in the previous season, Pyett was fourth-best scorer among the defenders and with a personal best of 20 goals second-best goalscorer. This gave him the appointment to the WHL East First All-Star Team and the CHL Second All-Star Team. During the season he also took part with the Canadian national team in the U20 World Cup and won the gold medal.
In the fall of 2008 Logan Pyett took part in the training camp of the Detroit Red Wings and completed the 2008/09 season in the American Hockey League with the Detroit farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins . There he had problems with his offensive play, which was already his great strength with the juniors, and on the defensive he showed deficits in terms of speed and physical strength. In the second half of the season he was finally able to improve and also increased his yield on the offensive.
In July 2012, Pyett signed a one-year contract as a free agent with the New York Rangers , which, however, only used him with their farm team, the Connecticut Whale . The Canadian then left North America and spent two seasons in the Continental Hockey League , at HK Vitjas Podolsk , at Admiral Vladivostok and at Severstal Tscherepowez . After the 2014/15 season he returned and signed a one-year contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL in August 2015 . A few months later, however, Pyett was diagnosed with sarcoma in his left leg, which caused him to be indefinitely absent.
After not being on the ice for two seasons due to the illness, he returned to play for the 2017/18 season. He spent the season in Japan with the Tōhoku Free Blades in the Asia League Ice Hockey . In the summer of 2018, the defender returned to North America and at the beginning of the 2018/19 game year played ten games for the Hershey Bears in the AHL. In December 2018 he moved to the Finnish club KooKoo Kouvola , which was based in the Liiga, for the rest of the season .
Logan Pyett's strengths are mainly on the offensive, where he can use his hard shot and precise passing game. However, he has weaknesses on the defensive, mainly because of his small height for a defender of 1.78 meters.
