Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari (* 1450 or 1451 in Genoa , † December 21, 1503 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, Archbishop of Benevento and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Origin and early years

He came from the noble family De Marj and was the natural son of Maurizio Cibo, governor of Spoleto, with a Spanish woman. His father was the brother of Pope Innocent VIII. Later cardinals from the same family were Innocenzo Cibo , Alderano Cibo and Camillo Cibo .

Initially castellan of Castel Sant'Angelo , Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari became cathedral capitular of the Vatican Basilica in 1481 , shortly afterwards also apostolic protonotary . Later he was commendatabbot of various monasteries.

Bishop and Cardinal

VIII. Appointed administrator of Vannes on August 29, 1490 , he retained this position until his death. On March 14, 1491 he opted for the titular church of San Marco and took up his apartment in the palace that adjoins this church. From January 1492 to 1493 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari was a participant in the 1492 conclave , in which Pope Alexander VI. was elected and spoke out openly against the intrigues that led to the election of Cardinal Borgia. o the newly elected pontiff threatened him with impeachment as a cardinal. At the suggestion of his uncle, Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari had a chapel with a bronze tomb for Innocent VIII built in the Vatican basilica by Antonio Pollaiuolo . The “ Longinus Lance ”, which Sultan Bayezid II had sent from Constantinople to that Pope as a gift, was also kept there. The chapel was demolished in 1606 during the renovation of St. Peter's Basilica and the ciborium with the "Longinus lance" was moved to the crypt of the papal basilica .

On December 31, 1494, Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari found himself in Ponte Molle welcoming King Charles VIII of France. He went with Alexander VI. on May 27, 1495 to Orvieto and returned to Rome on June 27, 1495. On December 9th 1497 he received the titular church Santa Cecilia in Commendam , which he kept until September 1500.

Last years and death

Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari opted on May 14, 1501 for the cardinal class of the cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian bishopric of Albano , but kept San Marco as the titular church in commendam . As administrator of the diocese of Noli , he took part in the first conclave of 1503 , the Pope Pius III. chose. He was also a participant in the second conclave in the same year that Julius II emerged as Pope. On November 29, 1503 he decided on the suburbicarian bishopric of Palestrina .

Less than a month later, Lorenzo Cibo de 'Mari died standing at the age of 53. He was buried in the Roman church of Santa Maria del Popolo . He bequeathed his liturgical vestments and his library to the diocese of Palestrina in a will.
