Lost Future - Combat Evolved (Original title: The Lost Future ) is an action and adventure - TV movie from 2010, set in a future where mankind has been almost completely wiped out. The earth is again covered by large forests full of danger and the few remaining people live in small tribal associations somewhere in these forests.

action

In 2510, after the collapse of human civilization, an isolated tribe of people struggled to survive hidden in the vast jungles of a future world. You will be attacked by ferocious beasts and mutated humans who are carrying a mysterious and deadly disease. Just being close to the beasts is enough to become infected with their disease. As soon as someone is bitten by them, he turns himself into one of those beasts very quickly.

Savan is the future leader of this tribe. According to the stories of the elders of the tribe, they are the only surviving humans in this hostile world. Kaleb wants to follow in the footsteps of his father, who has gone away and reported about other people and about civilization outside. After he tries to leave the camp, it is attacked by mutants. Much of the tribe is holed up in a cave; only Savan, Kaleb and Dorel survive outside. Kaleb can convince them that the three of them cannot help their tribe and must at least try to find other people. You meet Amal, who has been watching Kaleb for a long time, as it was the wish of Kaleb's father to look after his well-being. Amal tells them that Caleb's father developed the cure for the mutational disease. However, this was stolen. With Kaleb's father dead, Kaleb, who can read, is the only one who would be able to make more of this immunizing cure.

Since the tribe in the cave is besieged by the beasts and they are infected, this mission develops into a race against time. In order to save humanity, they need the antidote for the disease in the form of a yellow powder. The fight for their own survival begins and Savan, Kaleb and Dorel, separated from Amal, soon end up in the big city, whose dilapidated houses are reminiscent of New York's skyscrapers, which served as a template.

There Gagen has his fortress and is now the leader of another tribe of surviving people, who all hope for something from the powder through service and hard work, but which is kept under lock and key by Gagen for his children and grandchildren. With the help of Gagen's daughter, Kaleb, Savan and Dorel manage to steal the powder from the hiding place and flee. Gagen pursues them and shoots Savan. With Amal's help, Dorel and Kaleb reach their village, which is still besieged by mutants. Amal has found other allies with whose help they kill the mutants. Gagen also shows up and demands his powder back. Amal throws himself in front of Kaleb and is injured when Gagen fires an arrow at Kaleb. Kaleb then kills Gagen and the villagers are healed with the powder.

Since the powder is almost used up, and possibly other people in this world have survived, Kaleb decides to return to the city and there, according to the recipe of his own father, to make new powder, as he promised Gagen's daughter. She herself says that she does not want revenge and will not send people like her father. He saw it as a weapon, she as the future. At Amal's home, Kaleb's sister is teaching the tribe's children to read when Kaleb says goodbye to her and the injured Amal.

background

The background to this film is the idea of showing how once highly developed, modern people in the future, disconnected from their former achievements, develop back into a kind of primeval people. The beginning of the film shows an apparently distant time, but there are modern elements such as binoculars. For example, the character Caleb, whose father could still read, owns a Tom Sawyer book.

The film was shot as a German-South African co-production by Universum Film GmbH, Film Afrika Worldwide and Tandem Communications in South Africa. In addition, computer effects such as the 3D animation of the giant sloth were used. Around seven million US dollars were spent on filming .

On November 13, 2010, the US broadcaster Syfy premiered Lost Future . The German-language television broadcast took place on April 3, 2011 on RTL . The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on March 25, 2011 .

Reviews

The reviews of this film are mostly negative, despite the partly top-class cast:

“The end-of-time adventure on RTL doesn’t bring much news. As usual in this genre, monsters, mutants, zombies or, as here, beasts are unleashed on humanity. A deep and multi-layered story is missing. The action scenes alone are a pleasure in the film, but there is too much gimmicky on the side. It has become a typical doomsday movie, but nothing more. [...] But whether this investment has actually paid off is ultimately a nitpick. The logical errors, the cheap computer-processed effects and the great boredom in between are cornerstones of the film, which in principle would not have been worth a tired dollar. Even the star cast of English and Canadian actors of high standing, even if they are young actors, cannot save the film due to its conceptual weaknesses. This leaves only a few impressive pictures that are overshadowed by a passable search for the meaning of the film over 90 minutes. "

“Straightforwardness at all levels is what sets this seven million dollar film apart. The characters are clear, the narrative style of director Mikael Salomon, who was honored with the Emmy Award for his work on the series ' Band of Brothers ' , is straightforward and full of tension. The characters are driven by the threat of wild animals and zombies , besides which there are the usual conflicts about leadership qualities and women. ' The Lord of the Rings ' actor Sean Bean stands out in the cast . Young attractive actresses like Annabelle Wallis (' The Tudors ') in their tight Stone Age dress above all offer high show values, as do the eerie jungle landscape or the ruined city overgrown with ivy tendrils. "

“In the end it just turned out to be a typical human doom movie that - of course - and at most can meet TV standards with the budget used. And THE LOST FUTURE-KAMPF UM DIE ZUKUNFT is again about future madness, being human in harmony with nature, about animals, men and biblical quotations, which are rather reasonably accompanied by wild exoticism. Even with the star line-up, only a few impressive images remain in your head. In between, however, there is a lot of boredom and swaggered search for meaning lurking on the audience. Wanted to be cheap in terms of computer technology - in any case, watching TV or DVD is not really fun. "
