Louis George Martin (born November 11, 1936 in Kingston , Jamaica , † January 17, 2015 in Derby , Derbyshire ) was a British weightlifter .

Career

Louis Martin grew up in Jamaica and came to England when he was 19 . There he played cricket in school and did bodybuilding . He didn't start lifting weights until he was 22, but he was already in excellent physical shape. Since his talent was recognized early on, he got all the support from the British Weightlifting Association. His coach was the British association coach Al Murray. In 1959 he won his first British championship and surprised the entire world elite at the world championship of the same year, which took place in Warsaw; he won the middle heavyweight title (up to 90 kg body weight). Until 1966 he started with great success in international championships and was world champion three times. But he never succeeded in becoming an Olympic champion. A silver and a bronze medal were his yield at the 1960 and 1964 games.
