Lucjan Wolanowski (* as Lucjan Kon February 26, 1920 in Warsaw ; † February 20, 2006 ibid) was a Polish writer , journalist , traveler , translator .

biography

Great-grandson of the industrialist and manufacturer Majer Wolanowski (1844-1900), son of the lawyer Henryk W. Kon (1868-1949) and Róża Wolanowska (1883-1932). Brother of Elżbieta Wassongowa (1908 to 2007), editor and translator of beautiful literature, and of Irena Sawicka (1914 to 2004), lawyer .

During the occupation he lived first in Warsaw and then hid with his father and daughter Irena in Sochaczew and Podkowa Leśna . In 1941 he was sworn into the Kampfkampfbund (ZWZ) and from 1942 he was a soldier in the State Army (Armia Krajowa). He participated in the resistance movement in which he listened to foreign radio stations (including the BBC ) and then prepared messages for the Polish underground.

In 1950 he married Anna Bożenna Szumowska (now Anna Wolan, born in 1924), who later became a singer and soloist of the Poznan Opera (their marriage lasted until 1969). On March 4, 1952, their daughter, Anna Helena, was born, who from the late 1960s lived in Australia (now in North Bondi in the Sydney suburbs).

His education

Lucjan first attended the capital's Mikołaj Rej grammar school, but because of the illness he continued his education at the Jan Wieczorkowski men's grammar school in the Rabka spa town (Abitur in 1938). In the years 1935–1938 together u. a. with Jacek Woźniakowski , who later became an art historian and Catholic publicist , he ran the magazine “Szczebioty” (Twitter).

He studied at the Faculty of Electrochemistry and Electrometallurgy of the Polytechnic Institute in Grenoble ( France ). During the summer vacation of 1939 he returned to Poland , where the outbreak of World War II surprised him.

Professional background

He made his debut as an author in 1941 under the pseudonym "Wilk" ( Wolf ) in a conspiratorial magazine "Kronika Tygodniowa" with features "Anecdotes in the Shadow of History" and then in the high-volume evening paper "Dzień Warszawy" (1943 to 1944) . His supervisor at the time was Teofil Syga (1903 to 1983) who later became Mickiewicz connoisseur.

After the end of the war in 1945–1951 he worked in the Polish Press Agency (PAP). He was u. a. Rapporteur for the conference for foreign journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw. At this time he learned a. a. know such well-known journalists as: Edward R. Murrow , Sydney Gruson, Flora Lewis, Larry Allen, Vincent Buist and Pierre Maréchal, who were then active as correspondents in Poland .

Wolanowski was a member of the editorial board of the following magazines:

In the 1960s he made numerous reporter trips, including some trips around the world. He was a UN- accredited correspondent for landing operations in New Guinea (1962 to 1963). In 1965 he was a US State Department scholar . He was given honorary citizenship of Springfield in the American state Illinois granted. He was in Kennedy's Cape when the spaceship Gemini 5 was shot up from there .

From 1967–1968 he worked as a consultant in the information department of the World Health Organization ( WHO ) in Geneva and then in the area of Southeast Asia and Oceania (including in New Delhi , Bangkok and Manila ). He has written reports on tropical disease control and drug trafficking in the Philippines , Thailand , Hong Kong , Sarawak , Sabah and Brunei .

In 1984 he retired .

Memberships

Member of the Union of Journalists of the Republic of Poland (Stowarzyszenie Dziennikarzy RP, 1945–1951), the Society of Polish Journalists (Stowarzyszenie Dziennikarzy Polskich, 1951–1982 and 1991 to 2006), the Union of Polish Writers (Związek Literatów Polskich, 1959 to 1983 ), the Polish PEN Club (Polski PEN Club, 1971-2006) and the Society of Polish Writers (Stowarzyszenie Pisarzy Polskich, 1989-2006). Co-founder of the International Association of Aircraft Writers, established in 1960 by the World Aircraft Trade Organization IATA in Montreal .

Author of 25 collections of reports that have been reprinted several times and have been translated into foreign languages ​​(in Germany about Bolko Schweinitz and Emmanuel Gomolla ). Lived in Mokootów, Warsaw, at 23 Odolańska Street, in the former home of PAP employees.

Lucjan Wolanowski died on February 20, 2006 in Warsaw . Buried three days later in the Jewish cemetery there at Okopowa Street 49/51 (1st street, 2nd quarter).

In April 2006 the University of Silesia published a special supplement to the university newspaper dedicated to the writer, which contains some fragments of autobiographical texts, statements about the life and works of the writer, press reviews and archival photographs of the trips made by Wolanowski. Among the authors appear u. a. Jacek Woźniakowski , Hilary Koprowski , Eugeniusz Grasberg, Ludwik Jerzy Kern , Lech Paszkowski, Jolanta Klimowicz-Osmańczyk and Krystyna Goldbergowa.
