location

Luduș is located roughly in the middle of Transylvania on the Mureș River . The district capital Târgu Mureș is located about 40 km to the east.

history

Luduș was first mentioned in a document in 1377 (the incorporated village of Gheja as early as 1366). The place - which until 1918 belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , the Principality of Transylvania and Austria-Hungary - had a rural character for a long time, but had a certain importance as a local trading center. In 1800 it received the status of a municipality, in 1850 it became a local administrative center. In 1871 Luduș got a railway connection; a little later the place became a railway junction due to a railway branching off to the north in the direction of Bistritz . As a result, Luduş took an economic boom; especially after the Second World War, industrial companies (especially food processing) were settled. 1960 Luduş was raised to the city.

population

Originally, Luduș was mainly inhabited by Romanians ; at the 1850 census, of the 2031 inhabitants, 1795 were Romanians and 81 were Hungarians . In the course of the economic upswing and the Magyarization , the Hungarian population increased significantly; in 1920, 6195 people lived in Luduş, of which the relative majority (2965) designated themselves as Hungarians; in addition, 2,458 Romanians, 743 Jews and 12 Germans lived in the village. After the Second World War, the Romanian share increased again and soon made up the majority. In 2002, 17,497 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 12,190 Romanians, 4,414 Hungarians, 857 Roma and 11 Germans.
