Ludwig Adolf Staufe-Simiginowicz (born May 28, 1832 in Suczawa , † May 19, 1897 in Chernivtsi ) was the first native German-speaking poet of the Bukovina .

life and work

On her father's side of Ukrainian , on her mother's side of German origin, Staufe grew up in Suczawa. At the Imperial and Royal High School in Chernivtsi , the revolution of 1848/49 in the Austrian Empire inspired him to write his first poem. He had it printed as a leaflet in Chernivtsi under the code name Adolf Sand . Inspired by his success, he published poems and short stories in fiction magazines, in Iris (Graz), Phönix (Innsbruck) and Galizia (Lemberg). The first volume of poetry, Hymns , appeared in 1850 . In 1852 the album of the newest poems appeared , a poetic anthology for the benefit of the lively foundation of the state library.

Vienna

In the same year Staufe began studying history and German at the University of Vienna . He became a candidate for teaching at the Schottenfelder Realschule . He made many friends among the Viennese writers , journalists and intellectuals . He wrote poems, novellas, daily reports and theater reviews for the Österreichische Illustrierte Zeitung , the Theater-Zeitung , the Danube and other newspapers. He wrote folklore articles for the journal for German mythology and morality founded by Johann Wilhelm Wolf . His fairy tales from Bukowina , published there in 1853 and 1855, were appreciated by Wilhelm Grimm . The collection of poems, Greetings from Lower Austria (1855) , also dates back to the Viennese years .

Back in Bukovina, Staufe became a supplement at the grammar school in Chernivtsi. As a forum for the Bukovinian writers, he founded the family sheets almanac in 1857 , a supplement to the Bukovinian house calendar . He himself uses it for stories, sketches, moral images and folk tales, including the versed saga of the robber captain Alexander Dobusch .

Kronstadt

In 1858 Staufe got a job as a high school teacher in Kronstadt , Transylvania ; but he did not break off his relations with Bukovina. His family sheets appeared in Chernivtsi until 1860. His contributions appeared in Ernst Rudolf Neubauer's Sunday newspaper of the Bukowiner and in Capilleri's beech leaves (1864) or were published by Karl Emil Franzos and Johann Georg Obrist . Staufe's work came to full bloom in Kronstadt: he wrote for leading German magazines ( Westermannsmonthshefte , Deutsche Roman-Zeitung ), translated from Romanian and wrote ethnographic and cultural-historical articles.

The Romanesque Poets. In its original forms and metrically translated , an anthology of Romanian Larik was published in Vienna in 1865. “The monastery building” (Kronstadt 1870) is an adaptation of the Romanian folk tale by Master Manole . A scientific study is Die Bodenplastik der Bukowina (Kronstadt 1873).

When the 100th anniversary of the union of Bukowina with Austria was celebrated and the Franz Joseph University was founded, Staufe and Moritz Amster published the poetic memorial book . In addition to them, there were contributions from Reich German and German-speaking authors from Bukovina, namely from Josef Kunz, Franzos, Hans Jaksch , Obrist, Richard Strele von Bärwangen , Viktor Umlauff and others.

Chernivtsi

When he returned to Czernowitz as a professor at the Teachers' Training College, he was mainly occupied with translations and ethnographic-folkloric research until the end of his life : The ethnic groups of Bukovina. Ethnographic-cultural-historical sketches (1884), folk tales from Bukovina (1885), Little Russian folk songs, in metric translation (1888), The Pruthtal in Galicia and in Bukovina (1896). In addition, as in the past, he tirelessly published novels, fairy tales, stories, travel sketches, poems and occasional essays, as well as a history of the Czernowitzer Musikverein , a cantata for the 25th anniversary of the gymnastics club and the text for the comic operetta Die Junggesellensteuer .
